Today is Veteran's Day and we thank and remember all those men and women, living and deceased, who fought for our country.


So I decided to have a bowl of Uncle Sam's Cereal for breakfast this morning on Vetreran's Day. Seeing it in the grocery store one day lately, I thought it'd be a good cereal to try since I don't think we'd had it in our house before.

Uncle Sam's Cereal has been around since 1908, which surprised me. It's a product of U.S. Mills (not General Mills). I don't think it's very well-known.

This cereal is whole wheat flakes, something like a "Special K" flake, but smaller. It actually looks more like an original whole grain. This preserves the whole grain flavor and the natural fiber as well. As we all have been told, fiber is a very important part of our diet and one serving bowl provides 10 grams of fiber. The color is a darker brown. Uncle Sam's cereal is a tasty whole-wheat flake with flaxseed.  It stays nice and crunchy, even down to the last bite. The flaxseed part really appeals to me too. It adds just a little extra crunch and delicious flavor. Flaxseed is so good for you too. Flaxseed adds "heart healthy" fat and is also an excellent source of essential fatty acids. (Your body cannot make this so you have to get it in by the foods you eat.)

Uncle Sam's is also low in sugar. One serving has less than one gram of sugar. It does not taste sweet to me, which is a good thing. They do add a smidgen of barley malt, but this is just done to enhance the flavor of the whole wheat.

Since Uncle Sam's Cereal is low in sugar, it has been rated as low glycemic, meaning that it doesn't cause your blood sugar to spike up making the need for an insulin reaction. This study was approved by the Glycemic Research Institute.

So Uncle Sam's Whole-Wheat Cereal is low in sugar, but it's also low in sodium. The normal maximum allowance for sodium is 2300 mg and one serving of this crunchy cereal has just 135 mg of sodium, so go ahead and enjoy a bowl with no guilt!

Last but not least, Uncle Sam's Cereal does not have artificial anything (no colors, flavors or preservatives). It also tastes great when added to yogurt, cottage cheese, or with some fruit.

Look for a box of Uncle Sam's in your store. There is an eye-catching red and white stripe all the way around the edges of the front of the box. The words "Uncle Sam" are in a large, white print with a bright blue background, making this box look somewhat like the American flag.

The price is also a little less than mainstream cereals, so that's another plus to Uncle Sam's.

HISTORY: In 1908, Founder, Lafayette Coltrin, was advised to try adding flaxseed to his diet by his doctor. He began putting some on his whole-wheat flakes for breakfast. Lafayette Coltrin liked the combination so much, he decided to make it available for everyone. He also apparently looked like "Uncle Sam", which is why he gave this name to his new cereal.
