UFC IX - Shamrock And Severn Do It Again
Written: May 9, 2012 (Updated May 9, 2012)
Rated a Very Helpful Review by the Epinions community
Pros:Olympic Gold Medalist Mark Schultz was impressive in his only UFC fight.
Cons:The main event bored everyone to tears.
The Bottom Line: This was not the UFC's finest hour.
If you want to point to where the UFC first started to feel heat for their no holds barred style, you'd point at this show. The show was in jeopardy until nearly the last minute thanks to Arizona Senator John McCain's issue with the sport. He was very vocal with how brutal the sport was and it was concluded in Detroit courts that the show would go on, but with modified rules including no closed fists and no headbutts.
The show was also noteworthy for two other reasons. It was the first show done without a tournament and it booked like a boxing card. Guys were only fighting once on this show. It also featured one of the worst fights in UFC history between Ken Shamrock and Dan Severn.
It was built up as the fight to determine the world's greatest fighter, but was instead more of a dance where neither guy wanted to take any chances and thus, the actual fighting was little. For a fight that was sold as the best of the best, it was a huge disappointment. Severn outlasted Shamrock via split decision in a 30 minute snoozer. It should've been a draw.
Olympic Gold Medalist Mark Schultz, brother of David Schultz, had his first and only UFC bout against Gary Goodridge. Schutlz won on blood stoppage and in impressive fashion. He was training with Dave Beneteau who was to face Goodridge, but was injured. Schultz took his place and won the fight. After the fight, he was unsure if he would fight again. He didn't, at least for the UFC. He had one fight in Brazil seven years later.
Japanese sumo wrestler Koji Kitao faced Mark Hall, who he outweighed by 200 pounds. Hall broke Kitao's nose early and the bout was stopped. The size difference was amazing and the stoppage was the most memorable thing on the card.
In other bouts, Cal Worsham defeated Zane Frazier, jiu jitsu fighter Rafael Carino defeated Matt Anderson, and the impressive Don Frye defeated Amaury Bitetti.
The terrible main event and national criticism overshadowed everything else and it was one of the worst shows up to that point in UFC history.
