The_Real_McCoy's Full Review: Stephen E. Ambrose Jr. - Undaunted Courage: Meriwe...
This is the first book by Ambrose that I've read, and it won't be the last. In my opinion, what makes a great writer is the passion with which the author writes. Ambrose's passion on the whole Lewis and Clark expedition is evident on each page. The way he cares for each aspect surrounding the expedition is like a love story.
In the forward, he mentions how his, and his family's love of the Lewis and Clark story led them to camp on many portions of the trail for weeks at a time. His dissection of the story can be broken into four parts: 1) Capt. Lewis's upbringing, 2) details on the origins of the expedition; Thomas Jefferson, Louisiana Purchase, and preparations, 3) the actual trip, and 4) the return, and aftermath.
I found the periphery issues of the journey to be as intriguing as the journey itself. Ambrose keeps these necessary details from bogging down the main story. I find it amazing how Ambrose brings to life a monumental event, which occurred almost 200 years ago.
This book inspired me to learn more about Lewis and Clark. I have since bought a compilation of their journals; The Journals Of Lewis And Clark, edited by Bernard De Voto, and with a foreword by Stephen Ambrose. If you are at all curious about the Lewis and Clark story, you must read this book.
