grandgram's Full Review: Stephen E. Ambrose Jr. - Undaunted Courage: Meriwe...
I received this book as a gift, and what a pleasure to read. I love history and this book gives it to you in spades. Ambrose brings to life Thomas Jefferson, as never before, his dream of a gateway to the west. There are so many times you can pictures these things happening, they are described so well. You would almost believe that the writer was on this trip. Keeping a reader so engrossed is what I call a great writer.
The description of Lewis and Clark and the hardships they endured was for fascinating reading. I enjoyed so much their stay with the many Indian camps, describing their life style and rituals. I enjoyed having the maps included as I referred to them often. It was amazing to me that their Indian guide could complete this trip, under so many hardships. She must have been a remarkable woman.
One of the features I enjoyed were then many games the Indians played and contest between the tribes. One such event was a game of Lacrosse, this intrigued me, as my grandson plays on a Lacrosse team in Lake Forest, Illinois. I did a research on Amazon.com and found a book on the history of Lacrosse, and sent it to him for his birthday. He is now on the Lacrosse team at Auburn University. It is amazing what you discover in books. ONE IS NEVER TO OLD TO FIND SOMETHING NEW IN BOOKS!!!!!
