Bonies7's Full Review: Stephen E. Ambrose Jr. - Undaunted Courage: Meriwe...
Lewis & Clark....you vaguely remember them, don't you?
Stephen Ambrose takes those two names and turns them in to flesh and blood that your mind can conjure as if they were standing directly in front of you.
Even more, he makes you realize that these men accomplished a task given to them by President Thomas Jefferson that is still remarkable even today. Yes - they did what they set out to do with little help from anyone.
What did they do? Simply said...they blazed a trail from St. Louis to the Pacific Northwest with little more than a canoe and a handful of supplies.
Ambrose - an award winning historian most famous for his work on the movie Saving Private Ryan - is in rare form here. His admiration of Captains Lewis & Clark is infectious, and at the end of this well written book, I bet you'll want to retrace their steps and view some of those same vistas that he describes so well.
The action is non-stop and the author's insights into the men behind the myth is uncanny. You feel like Ambrose was along for the journey...and in a sense he was...drawing from both Clark and Lewis' private journals and letters. He describes grizzly attacks, and encounters with wild Indians as if he was standing at the shoulder of these two historic giants.
This New York Times bestseller is now out in paperback and whether you are a fan of historical reality, or simply want to find a book that is difficult to put down...this is THE book for you. I highly recommend it for both it's prose and it's magic to grab the reader by the mind and take them along for an incredible journey across the rugged, unexplored Louisiana Purchase.
From the bestselling author of D-Day comes the definitive book on the most momentous expedition in American history--and one of the greatest adventure...More at Buy.com Marketplaces
