Ironcladd's Full Review: Stephen E. Ambrose Jr. - Undaunted Courage: Meriwe...
I love the American West, in fact I travel to the Rocky Mountains or the Pacific Northwest as much as I can from my Illinois home. None of this would have been possible if it hadn't been for the journeys of Lewis and Clarke. Stephen Ambrose sets down here in a perfect piece of research and writing, the story of Meriwether Lewis, Jefferson, and the West. He did this primarily as a biography of Meriwether Lewis, and would have done both he and Clarke, but that someone else was writing a biography of Clarke, and Ambrose, ever the gentleman, wrote the book this way.
One would never have learned of all of the nuances and background of the enigmatic Lewis had it not been for this book, without having to delve into obscure sources, and years of research. This book is simply wonderful. Ambrose writes in a style that is interesting, pithy, witty, and to the point. He also writes with tremendous emotion about his subject, and honesty as well. Ambrose compares the Lewis and Clarke Expedition, also called the "Corps of Discovery", with the moon landings, and even more difficult.
The whole thing is overwhelmingly fascinating, and at one point of coincidence, when Sacagawea meets up with her brother, Ambrose admits that if you were writing fiction, you wouldn't have dared write it that way!
History should not be boring, and Stephen Ambrose and his writing are far from that! This book really makes history live!
