Freak369's Full Review: Uni-Ball Jetstream Premier Rollerball Pen Black
I love free stuff. I love it when I get free stuff. I love it when I get free stuff for doing stuff that I would have normally done without any type of reward. When I upgraded my bank account to 'premier' level to get more free ATM transactions and used the email link to verify my online account I was told to stop by the customer retention office the next time I went to my local branch. Not only did I get some cool Post-It Notes but I also got a UniBall Jetstream Premier in my swag bag. I guess banks are doing whatever they can to keep their customers happy and the "premiere" tie in with the bank account and pen was just too sweet.
The Jetstream Premiere is a nice looking pen but sometimes looks don't really mean much when it comes to how a pen writes or performs over time. While I do fall victim to good looking pens, what keeps me hooked on them and keeps me coming back for more is how the ink dries, if there is any skipping and if the roller ball tip makes a scratching noise when you write. I had no idea what the price was on the Jetstream Premiere when I got it and when I saw that most online sites were selling it for five dollars or more I had to wonder exactly why this thing cost so much. Yes, it writes nice and it looks great and yes, it is refillable but it isn't something that I personally think warrants such a high price tag. I guess adding the word 'premiere' to something allows you to charge more. Sorry but this isn't worth the suggested retail price.
If you like pens with a fat line to them then you will love the Jetstream Premiere but you have to keep in mind that there are more than a few pens in the Jetstream series from UniBall so if you are going to order this online you will want to make sure that it is the Premiere version that you are getting. Refills make it an eco-friendly product but they can be hard to come by in retail stores. Keep the cardboard sleeve that comes with the Jetstream Premiere so you can reorder the correct refill when the time comes to replace it. There's no visual ink guide but the comfort grip is something that you might like. To me a comfort grip is something that makes writing a pain-free experience, the one on this pen is nice but it could be a little on the softer side.
One of the biggest selling points to the Jetstream Premiere is the check fraud prevention; UniBall pimps this heavily and calls it "Super Ink". The ink is permanent but can be removed from plastic and other surfaces with some work. In regards to altering written items, the ink in the Premiere can't be removed or changed without making it painfully obvious. I don't use checks so that isn't a big deal to me but it is nice to know that I have this around if I need to sign something and I am worried that someone might try to change the date on it or do something to my signature. On the rare occasion that I get a money order I will use a pen like this so that the name of the recipient can't be changed if it happens to get delivered to the wrong address or person.
As far as the performance of the ink; it dries fast and doesn't smudge. Some pens that have black ink look washed out or wimpy but the Jetstream Premiere has a strong, dark ink to it. It writes smoothly so if you are looking for something to write in a journal with or for school to take notes, this is a good pick if you can find it for a reasonable price. It has a quiet write too; no scratching or jostling of the inner pieces that operate the clicker for the retractable tip. The Jetstream Premiere has a solid feel to it and the barrel components are well made; it is a nice switch up from plastic roller ball pens but the price on it makes it a little out of the 'affordable' range.
