| Saxguy's Full Review: Unibroue Terrible |
I generally enjoy Belgian (country and/or style) ales because of the flavor and the higher alcohol content. Ive also enjoyed several products by the Unibroue Brewery in Canada before, such as Trois Pistoles and Don de Dieu. So, while looking for something new at my local liquor store, Terrible stood out and I bought it at $8.99 for a 750ML bottle.
The little promotional card on the bottle, described it as an Abbey-style Dark Ale, with 10.5% ABV and suggested serving it on its own or to complement smoked meats and strong aged cheeses.
The web site recommended to serve it around 50 degress and it seemed like it was close to that when I popped the cork. Here are the quite enjoyable results:
The Nose
Smells like a Belgian ale, slight fruity aroma, although it was hard for me to identify it further.
The Pour
Quick-forming, rich head, which, surprisingly, subsided to almost non-existent. The color was extremely dark brown, although the card described it as black
The Taste
Slight sweetness, Not unlike Port or Sam Adams Utopias, definitely a Belgian Ale malt taste, but more subtle and balanced than Unibroues other products, the typical Belgian ale and Chimay. The taste was not quite as fruity as the pour. Considering how high the ABV is it, its not that heavy.
The Aftertaste
Slight fruitiness and a long, lingering taste of slight, smooth Belgian malt.
The Aftermath
A quick, pleasant buzz, plus a slight case of the sniffles as I have a MILD allergy to wheat. My doctor told me not to drink beer. And I dont, at least not very much (g).
I have no intention of driving anywhere anytime soon.
I did not have anything to eat with it, although I agree that it would go well with a strong meat dish steak, smoked cold cuts or strong cheeses. Their web site suggests Blue Cheese, which I imagine would go great with this.
Their web site reports that Terrible received Silver awards in 2003 from the Canadian brewing Institute Awards and The Chicago Beverage Testing Institute. They also report that Unibroues beers use in-bottle fermentation, which is not only all natural but also preserves vitamins and protein. To be honest, I think there are better sources for vitamins and protein.
This was thoroughly enjoyable and I recommend it highly. I will have it again.
Thanks for reading. God bless!
