| cbobbb's Full Review: Union Oyster House |
I am not a reviewer of restaurants, however, on a recent trip into Boston my family and I ate at Ye Olde Union Oyster House. We enjoyed it so much I decided to write and epinion on it.
Ye Olde Union Oyster House
Union Oyster House was established in 1826. It is the oldest restaurant in Boston and also the oldest restaurant that has been in continuous service in America - 175 years!
Location
The restaurant is located at 41 Union Street in Boston - it can be found on the historic Freedom Trail close to Quincy Market.
My husband, Mother-in Law, 18 month old son and I chose to eat at the Union Oyster House at lunchtime on a busy Thursday in Boston. We were sight-seeing with Grandma and chose our dining time very carefully - 2:00PM after the business rush. We never know what will happen with our toddler when he's eating out! It worked - the Union Oyster House was busy but they had a choice of tables available and were able to provide us with a highchair.
Service
The staff at the restaurant were very friendly and accomodating - the restaurant is very big with multiple dining areas. We had a table upstairs but were able to leave our stroller stowed safely on the ground floor. We received our highchair quickly and were made to feel welcome with a toddler (I had initial concerns as a lot of business folk do dine there). Our waitress was friendly, helpful and fast without making us feel as though we were being rushed.
The Menu
This is obviously a seafood restaurant. The Union Oyster House has many specialities, among them:
Oysters - The restaurant has a raw bar downstairs and upstairs the oysters are served "any-which-way" you want them! I prefer mine cooked.
Oyster House Chowder - The menu said it was a "A Boston Classic", it was - fantastic!
Lobster - The restaurant serves New England Hardshell lobsters from their own pools - again they are prepared everyway you can imagine
Ye Olde New England Favorites - these included Clams, Shrimp, Boston Scrod, Scallops, Swordfish, Sole, and Salmon - Fried, Broiled or Blackened.
I tried the Clam Chowder followed by Crabcakes, another speciality. Everything was excellent. The crabcakes were accompanied by a choice of potato and coleslaw. We also enjoyed the house baked cornbread.
The Cost
Lunch for 3 at the Union Oyster House came to $50 - which I thought was very reasonable given the fact it was the oldest restaurant in Boston and all the trappings that could come with that. They could have easily charged more for the food. The dinner menu looked incredible but was definitely more expensive than lunch, which is often the case.
Would I eat there again?
...Just you try and stop me! Great food, family friendly and a helping of New England history. I couldn't ask for anything more!
