| dvannucc's Full Review: Union Oyster House |
Last night I had dinner with a friend at the Union Oyster House. I have lived in Boston for 7 years and had never been there before, so I decided to check it out. The Union Oyster House boasts the title of the oldest restaurant in Boston. With the building being constructed in the 1600’s and the history that has happened there since, the dining has a wonderful charming New England ambiance far different from the more mainstream restaurants found anywhere else in the Boston. Our server was polite, patient and very attentive. The menu consisted of classic New England seafood dishes... lobster, halibut, oysters, shrimp etc.. I ordered a broiled seafood sampler dish, and my friend ordered Seafood Newburg that was served with a puffed pastry and rice. The food arrived fairly quickly. My first reaction was to the lack of presentation the dishes had for and average of $25 a piece. The Seafood Newburg covered the rice completely, and the puff pastry was deflated and looking like a soggy biscuit. It sort of represented one of those microwave dinners. My entree (broiled seafood sampler) had no sauces whatsoever. The fish and scallops had been broiled, yes, but with no seasoning or sauce! I asked the server for sauce, any kind of sauce, and just give me flavor! She promptly returned with two plastic capped containers of tartar sauce and cocktail sauce. When a meal costs more than $10, I would think that a sauce, even ketchup, should be served in a porcelain ramekin; plastic is unacceptable. I was hungry so I ate most of my entree. I didn't stick around for dessert. The charming atmosphere and the history behind the building, balanced out the lack of food quality. Perhaps next time is visiting from out of town, I will return to The Union Oyster House, but probably only for drinks and the raw bar.
