| xymox_1's Full Review: Union Oyster House |
The Union Oyster House is famous for being the oldest restaurant in the United States. Which is good, because it certainly wouldn't be famous for it's food!
The Union Oyster House suffers from the same problem most of the famous restaurants in Boston suffer from - mediocre food. Like Anthony's and Legal Sea Foods, better choices exist for food, though no one will likely be impressed back in New Jersey if you say you came to Boston and ate at Dolphin Seafood.
Located very close to Government Center (take the T, parking is almost impossible), Union Oyster House seems like it has not been renovated since it was built back in the 1800's. The seats are uncomfortable and very close together, the decor is old, the wood beams are stained with grease and smoke, and the whole thing seems like a fire trap. The service is adequate, but on a busy night do not expect a friendly waitperson.
In the front of the restaurant sits the Oyster Bar for which is it famous (The Founding Fathers frequented this place!) and it still has pretty good oysters.
The rest of the menu consists of typical Boston tourist fare - shrimp, lobster, steak and scallops. None of it is done very originally and most of it is cooked in too much oil. It is not too say it is bad, it is just mediocre. And on the pricey side for what you get.
If you like Oysters and want to see America's oldest restaurant, go and sit at the Oyster bar and eat some. If you don't like Oysters, go in, walk around and then find a better place to actually eat!
