Union Square Grill was recommended by the concierge at our hotel. We were staying downtown at the Westin and it was a short walk for us. Although the concierge called and reserved a table for us, we could easily have walked in and gotten a table. It was early evening though (about 6pm), and the crowd had picked up considerably by the time we left.
The service was very good and the food even better. If you're hungry for a great steak (and I mean hungry) and you don't mind spending at least $50 for dinner, then this is a great place to go.
I ordered the strip steak with peppercorn sauce and a dinner salad. The approximate cost of the steak was $36 and salad $6.95.
The dinner salad was large and very nice with fresh, house made dressing. I had bleu cheese, my friend had ranch -- we both raved about the salads. The waiter told us all their dressing were made from scratch. As we sipped our drinks and nibbled on the bread, we were totally unprepared for the main course that lay before us.
My first reaction was "Oh my gosh!" The steak was huge and cooked to perfection. The meat was tender and delicious. The peppercorn sauce gave it just the right spicy touch and it was served with a generous helping garlic mashed potatoes and fresh asparagus. Did I mention the steak was huge??? I immediately regretted the bread I had been nibbling on when I saw the size of that steak.
The food was delicious, and the service prompt, polite, and accurate. Separate checks were not a problem. (We were traveling on business.)
I am on the Atkins diet and the reason we chose this restaurant was because we wanted steak, so it's hard for me to rate its "vegetarian friendliness." The salad was good and plentiful and the asparagus and potatoes were very good. However, seeing those incredible steaks might be too much for a strict vegetarian.
