Disclosure: Before taking any over the counter medication it is advised that you check with your doctor to make sure the medication is right for you and will not produce unwanted side effects that could be dangerous.
For many years now, I have suffered with bouts of insomnia and before I was pregnant with my daughter I would rely on some of the over the counter sleep aids to combat this problem. The brand that seemed to work the best for me was Unisom Maximum Strength SleepGels.
Unisom SleepGels main ingredient that aids in getting you to sleep is diphenhydramine hydrochloride, which is an antihistamine. The trade name for this ingredient is Benedryl.
Each Unisom SleepGel contains 50 mg of diphenhydramine hydrochloride, as well as the following inactive ingredients FD&C Blue No.1, Gelatin, Glycerin, a Pharmaceutical Glaze, Polyethylene Glycol, Propylene Glycol, Purified Water, Sorbitol, Titanium Dioxide.
This medication is recommended for adults and children at least 12 years of age. I, personally, would not give this medication to a 12 year old under any circumstances.
Since one Unisom SleepGel contains 50 mg of diphenhydramine hydrochloride, the dosage required for a restful night of sleep is one SleepGel. I have taken other brands that require you to take two tablets to get the desired effect. The fact that I don't like to swallow pills makes Unisom SleepGels dosage a plus in my book.
Unisom Maximum SleepGels are available in 8, 16 and 32 count packages and I must point out that the 8 count package is not in childproof blister packs like the larger count packages. Regardless of the size of package, please keep this and all medication out of reach of your children.
The following instructions are posted by the manufacturer and should be followed:
Do not use the product if the SleepGel Blister Seals are broken.
Do not take this product, unless directed by a doctor, if you have a breathing problem such as emphysema or chronic bronchitis.
Do not use this product if you have glaucoma.
Do not use this product if you have difficulty urinating due to an enlarged prostate gland.
Do not take this product if pregnant or nursing a baby.
Do not give to children under 12 years of age.
Avoid alcoholic beverages while taking this product.
Do not take this product if you are taking sedatives or tranquilizers, without first consulting your doctor.
Do not use this product while using any other product containing diphenhydramine, including one applied topically.
If sleeplessness persists continuously for more than two weeks, consult your doctor. Insomnia may be a symptom of serious underlying medical illness.
In case of accidental overdose contact a Poison Control Center immediately.
When I needed to take Unisom SleepGels, I would take them a half hour before I wanted to go to sleep and then lie in bed reading. This helped to relax me and allow the medication to take its full effect. Within that half hour of time, I would always fall into a very restful sleep. I would sleep peacefully for a good 8 hours.
Another aspect of Unisom SleepGels that I found to be comforting was that I did not experience nightmares or weird dreams when I took them. Some of the other over the counter sleep aids have caused me to have terrible nightmares or very outlandish dreams that actually interrupted my sleep.
The main reason that Unisom became my first choice sleep aid is because I did not experience that sluggish feeling the morning after I took them the way I did with other brands. It is very hard to function the morning after if you still feel like you are sleeping.
After trying numerous other sleep aids on the market I came to rely on Unisom SleepGels in my times of need. Unisom states that the sleepgels are non-habit forming. Since I did not use them as a regular means of putting myself to sleep I can't comment on this fact.
Although I still experience bouts of insomnia, I do not take these anymore because I have my daughter and the fact that I am pregnant again. Even after the birth on my second child I won't take this medication because I am afraid I will sleep too soundly and won't hear if my children need me. If my insomnia continues when my children are all grown up, then this will be the medication I go back to.
