medic181075's Full Review: Logitech Harmony® 880 LCD Remote Control
I bought this for my wife who is technically impaired. She would constantly call me at work because the TV wasn't working or she couldn't figure out how to play a DVD or with other issues. My 2 year old daughter would commonly change the television channel from 3, the default for satellite and cable boxes, and my wife wouldn't be able to figure out why she just got a blank screen. She also often complained about the multiple remotes, not understanding why she couldn't use the TV remote to change the channel. The main problems with universal remotes were changing the device from one to another, more confusing than multiple remote for my wife, and the lack of specialized keys that are required for anything other than the simple controls.
Now, to this remote. Once I gave my wife the initial instruction on how to use it she hasn't had a problem. I highly doubt that she would've been able to figure out how to program it, not knowing that the Blu Ray player is plugged into the HDMI 2 input and the VCR is plugged into the video 1 input, etc.... But as far as using it, she hasn't had a problem. She simply pushes the button to watch TV and it turns the satellite box on, the TV on, changes the input to TV, and changes the channel to 3. If there is a problem or something doesn't turn on, there is a help button that will ask simple questions to find and fix the problem. There is about 4 seconds required to turn any one activity on, but it is easy to get used to. Just keep the remote pointed at your system as long as the remote tells you to.
What makes this remote so simple is that instead of controlling an individual device, you choose and activity and the remote does the rest.
The other great thing about this remote is the rechargeable battery. I have kids with toys, so we never have the correct size batteries in the house when we need them. It is a lithium ion battery which should last longer than ni-cad batteries and shouldn't develop a memory when charged before it needs it.
While I only have this remote controlling 4 devices, it can control up to 15 devices. If it has an IR remote (no UHF), this remote can control it, and probably simplify it for people who have difficulties with technology.
The only thing I don't like about this remote is the small buttons which are all flush to each other. You actually have to look at the remote to perform simple things, such as entering a channel number or pausing the DVR. The only buttons which you can feel without looking are the volume, channel up/down and the 4 way oval selector in the center. While this upsets me a little bit, my wife doesn't seem to be bothered by it at all.
I have read some reviews where people have complained about the buttons quitting after some time. I will be sure to keep this review updated on how well this remote holds up to everyday use.
