PattyTherre's Full Review: Universal Remote Control R6 Remote Control
My family cannot keep a remote control around for more than a few months. Then they disappear only to be found months later. We recently lost BOTH our cable provided remote and our Harmony One and were left with nothing. We waited a while, hoping one or the other would show itself and it didn't. I finally gave up and picked up a Universal Remote Control R6 Remote Control at KMart.
To my surprise, this remote control is super easy to program and use and well worth the $24.00 I paid for it.
About The Remote
The URC R6 AVEX pre-programmed and learning remote control sends IR (infrared) commands to all home theater A/V equipment and can replace up to 6 different remote controls.
With MacroPower, you can program the R6 to turn up to 6 components ON or OFF with the press of one button. The SimpleSound™ feature gives you total volume control over all the components in your system, even those that do not have their own built-in volume control, such as TiVo, DVD and VCR.

Features of this Remote
For a relatively low price, this remote offers some very good features. Fist and foremost, we didn't have to look up codes or go through any sort of ritual to get our various electronics working with the Universal Remote Control R6 Remote Control. The two AA batteries were included and we inserted them and, within a push of a couple of buttons, everything was programmed. We had our TV, DVR, DVD/VCR, and a game system working within literally a couple of minutes.
I always dreaded going through all the codes or trying different things to get the remotes I have to pair with my devices. This remote does all the work for me. It's easier to program than any other remote I have used (and I have had many of them come and go over the years).
The remote is 6 1/4" x 12 5/8" x 2 1/8" and weighs about three quarters of a pound. I like that it is larger and has plenty of room for all the buttons.
Some features I like are that I can program up to six devices, the keys are back lit, the low battery warning feature, and the fact that I can program my four favorite channels into the remote.
The remote has an infrared range of about 30-50 feet but we usually use it about 10-15 feet from our devices in a smaller room. It has six macro buttons but I am totally not going there with this remote. It will be lost before I have a chance to use that feature. Lastly, the remote has a whopping 40 keys on it yet they are all very easy to read and recognize. You don't have to be a techy to use this remote.
My Experience
I really had no idea what type of remote to buy. I wanted a very simple one but one that would work with my devices, none of which are the same brand. I really just chose this remote randomly as I was overwhelmed by the selection.
When I got home, I put the batteries in and read the box to see what torture I would have to go through to program the remote. To my delight, I pushed just two buttons for each device and they were programmed in. It was phenomenal! We were using the remote minutes after taking it out of the box.
The six device buttons are TV, Cable, VCR, Audio, DVD, and Auxiliary. I only use four of those at this point.
TheUniversal Remote Control R6 Remote Control is set up much like the remote that comes with my DVR box from the cable company. There is a wheel in the middle with directional arrows with buttons for the guide, menu, info, and exit surrounding the wheel. The volume and channel up and down buttons are placed halfway down and the DVD/DVR/VCR commands are just a bit lower. You can do everything from the remote including setting up recordings, fast forwarding, rewinding, pausing, and using PIP and freeze frame.
The actual channel keys are placed at the lower part of the remote.
My one issue when I first got the remote was finding out how to see my list of recorded programs on my DVR. I didn't see a list button and thought I would be unable to access my recordings. It turns out that I didn't "teach" the remote that function. It took 10 seconds to do so.
You can also teach the remote by putting it head to head with another remote and pressing two buttons. The info will be transferred to the Universal Remote Control R6 Remote Control almost instantly.
Of course, I didn't HAVE a remote for my Universal to learn from but it was easy as pie to teach it to recognize all my devices without one.
We have been using this remote for a few months (and haven't yet lost it) and it works flawlessly. We have no problems understanding the buttons, using them, and quickly switching from device to device. I am very pleased with my choice of remotes and would buy another if (when?) I misplaced this one. It's got everything I need, is easy to program and use, and is relatively inexpensive.
Buying Info
I purchased my Universal Remote Control R6 Remote Control for around $24.00 at KMart. This remote is available at mass-market stores, some drugstores, and online at sites that sell remotes. It has a one year warranty and comes with two AA batteries that last for ages. It also has instructions on the box and an online users manual that will walk you step by step through everything you need to do but I am betting you won't need that manual. If I didn't, no one will!
Conclusion
This remote is made by Avex. I never even heard of that company before but the remote works for me! I have had no issues at all with the Universal Remote Control R6 Remote Control and am pleased with it. It has all the features I need to watch TV, use my DVR, set recordings, watch recorded shows, play DVDs and videos, and use my gaming system. I have room for two more devices too!
I can't find a con yet. I have to give this remote 5 stars. It's a very good remote for a very good price!
