| Lisa_J's Full Review: University Medical Acnefree Clear Skin Treatment K... |
During a phase of time that we were financially hindered(my spouse was in his last quarter of college, completing his externship), I was unable to replace my ProActiv skin products, but my adult acne continued. Do you know how depressing it is to struggle with adult acne? Rather than bore you with the details or climb into a pity party allow me to move forth to the focus of this review: University Medical AcneFree Clear Skin Treatment Kit.
When I first discovered the end aisle display of University Medical AcneFree Clear Skin Treatment at our local WalMart I was intrigued. However during this particular season of time, even the $18.99 listed retail was a stretch, albeit definitely less than ProActiv. Finally after picking the box up, approximately eight different times I decided WHY NOT?!
The University Medical AcneFree Clear Skin Treatment Kit contains three products: Purifying Cleanser, Renewing Toner, and Repairing Lotion. The three white bottles, accented with a blue and orange band, are nestled into a rectangle shaped box. This box is primarily white, has a silver band on the top and bottom, and is accented with orange and royal-blue bands. A tranlucent plastic, front cover, allows you to view the the three white (with blue and orange accent bands) product bottles. AcneFree is compared to ProActiv via a chart on the back of the box and various other advertising blurbs. However there is a disclaimer which states, "AcneFree is not manufactured, distributed, or licensed by Guthy-Rinker Corporation". As mentioned I purchased the initial kit at our local Walmart. This kit can be purchased online at drugstore.com.
The University Medical AcneFree Clear Skin Purifying Cleanser - step one - arrives in a 4 fl oz bottle. This cleanser has a mild medicine like scent - neither offensive nor preferred. It is easy to use; you work a small portion into a lather, massage onto face (avoid eye area) and rinse. Directions state that this cleanser can be used on your face, back and/or chest. This white cleanser is easy to dispense and use. The active ingredient is 2.25% Benzoyl Peroxide versus 2.5% Benzoyl Peroxide in ProActiv Renewing Cleanser. As recommended, I used this cleanser twice a day.
Secondly you apply the University Medical AcneFree Clear Skin Renewing Toner. This toner arrives in a 4 fl oz white bottle, whereas the ProActiv toner is in a transparent container (which I prefer). The bottle is easy to squeeze, allowing you to put some onto a cotton pad and apply to your face, avoiding the eye area. As recommended, I used the toner twice a day. This toner has a mild medicine scent, slightly resembling Witch Hazel.
The University Medical AcneFree Clear Skin Repairing Lotion has an active ingredient of 3.7% Benzoyl Peroxide, compared to the 2.5% Benzoyl Peroxide in the ProActiv Repairing Lotion. There is a offensive odor and this lotion (unlike ProActiv) has a noticable grit and after application a white layer sits on top of my skin for longer than I prefer. It was not possible to apply foundation over this product. Because of this I limited use to evening. The once a day use worked okay, perhaps due to the increased percent of Benzoyl Peroxide? But it is important to note that this product has a noticable (medicine like) odor and that it will fade certain articles of clothing. Another fault is that the 2 fl oz bottle is slightly hard to squeeze.
The savings, in comparison to the ProActiv system is significant. However it is important to note that there are differences between the skin care systems. I did go back to ProActiv, which I prefer. University Medical doesn't offer an equivalent to Proactiv Deep Cleansing Wash, which I really like due to the exfoliating properties. The packaging is better on the ProActiv products and the ProActiv Repairing Lotion is easier to apply.
If you struggle with Acne the ProActiv system, but if you can't afford it, this system is worth trying.
