| JBduckling's Full Review: Upper Deck MLB 2001 Series One Unopened Trading Ca... |
Michael, our then five year old, was having an especially tough day at preschool. I cannot really remember what the problem was that day, but I did want to do something special for him, a "Daddy" thing for the following time he attending the preschool. Michael loves baseball, follows the teams, enjoys wearing the logo clothes and hats for any Major League team, and is beginning to enjoy baseball cards. What a nice way to tell him, Daddy loves him, by including a pack of baseball cards in his lunch box. This way, he would share a little bit of home during lunch, when he opens his pack of cards. Plus, the conversation that night, "What players did you get? Any special cards? Any Milwaukee Brewers in this pack?" It is time we can share together, plus a little love in his lunch box when daddy puts a pack of baseball cards in it.
Why the Upper Deck 2001 box set? It is because Michael got his first "special" collectors insert card. In selected packs of cards, Upper Deck included a baseball card which had an actual piece of game used player jersey material built into the special card. Some of the jersey cards were even autographed by the player! Of course, our luck never reached that pinnacle until, one day, one lunch, Michael opened his pack and there it was! A Lou Piniella New York Yankees Jersey Card! Of course, Michael couldn't sound out Piniella nor understand why the card was of a Yankees jersey when Lou is the manager of the Seattle Mariners at the time. We immediately went out and bought a plastic container for this special keepsake which I hope he will cherish forever. And if baseball cards are still around thirty or so years from now, Michael can tell his son or daughter about his first insert collectors card and why it was special for him and his daddy.
The 2001 Upper Deck cards are not a bargain. While the cards are tremendous, the colors and pictures are vivid, realistic, and breathtaking, $2.99 a pack is pricey. Why the cost? The insert and special cards make it so. The jersey and autographs are expensive to produce and distribute. There are ten cards to a pack and there are plenty of special cards available, limited sets with a small number of card. In Upper Deck 2001, there are Home Run explosion set, Big League Beat, and E-Card subsets, all keeping you spending the money to get the set. The colors and photos are awesome! Each of the cards is printed with a gold foil over the card, an elegant touch. The Major League team logo in gold foil is a stunning, expensive touch. The card is solid, a long way from the card board of past cards of my youth. Great action picture, you can actually see the player's face and expressions!
While there are many, many other kinds of baseball collectors cards on the market, ranging from under a dollar a pack to nearly five, shop and check them out. There is a huge, huge variety and manufacturers. Find on company or edition you enjoy or try and sample the wide variety available. I do enjoy this Upper Deck set, strictly from the wonderful clear colors and pictures, plus the opportunity of a special card. Card collecting can be a great way of spending time and sharing moments with your kids, memories of the past building new traditions for the future. Michael will always remember Lou Piniella.
