Confessions of a Teenage Idiot: Katy Perry's offensive Ur So Gay single.

Written: Jul 02 '10
Pros:It serves as the proof for why she should stay an open-mic night performer.
Cons:Vocals, lyrics, ... everything?
The Bottom Line: Set it afire with 60 gallons of gasoline.

I feel I should explain why it is I've been reviewing singles and why I review them the way I do. As of late, I've found that writing reviews has become very difficult. I just don't have the time to dedicate to multiple album listens when I get so little time to listen to music at all (and when I have the time, I really don't wanna listen to something crappy). While I do have some album reviews in the works, I won't get them out until the database updates itself. Until, I've been turning to single releases. It's the Epinions equivilant of a comic strip artist switching to Sundays only. However, there is a way that I review singles that may irk some and may delight others. Every single released nowadays (if you can bother to find any), is released in a few different ways. There are maxi-singles, which usually contain remixes; there are singles divided into two or three parts; and then there are single-release downloads or in-store/radio promos. I've decided to stick to the single-release method of reviewing, because it allows me to concentrate on solely one song per go--- a musical snapshot, as it were. And given the fact that singles go out of print so quickly, which this new digitial revolution of music, it cannot be ignored. While I don't find it ideal, more and more singles are being released digitally rather than getting a hardcopy release. While this does not take away from its validity, it just makes it a little more difficult to filter.

This particularly single, released by monotonous and unoriginal pop starlet Katy Perry, was released post-iTunes. On Ur So Gay, Perry experiments with a darker Fiona-Apple sound, while doing some unpleasant tricks that her voice wasn't meant to do. This track was released from her debut album One of the Boys, and it continues in the theme of faux-gender bending and poor mixing of the sexes. Lyrically, this has got to be Perry's worst efforts yet. It sounds very much like a parody, and that somewhere out there... there might be a better song. Aside from the fact that the lyrics are so offensive to my intelligence that they cause extreme brain cell genocide, but they are also based around a ridiculous stereotype. As the gay community made her what she is, this song really surprised me. She took a very negative stereotype of what it means to be a gay man, and then she applies it to the song's love interest: "You jack off listening to Mozart [...] You're so gay, and you don't even like boys." The usage of the word "gay" to mean "undesirable" is more offensive than some may think. And anybody who uses the gay community to get rich and then attempt to pander to us isn't welcome. With Perry already doing Pro-Activ commercials, methinks that she's already overstayed her welcome.

The song was met with heavy criticism from both Perry fans and respected journals, calling her out for her complete hypocrisy and obvious sense of selling out: girls kissing girls is good; boys kissing boys is icky!

VERDICT: 1 SKULL
