mql1208's Full Review: Urban Decay Big Fatty Colored Mascara Black Cherry
I guess, because Urban Decay Big Fatty Mascara isn't ... fat.
Looking for just the right lash shade to coordinate with my new red hair, color was my priority in making the decision to purchase this product. If you're seeking a mascara with eye popping color, Urban Decay's Black Cherry is a winner. The very antithesis of subtle, unlike any number of colored mascaras, Black Cherry makes a bold statement. What you see, is what you get and the color dries unaltered. Smeared on a white piece of paper, the Black Cherry shade described as burgundy, looks magenta, but on the wand, and on my lashes, it reminds me of the color of Red Velvet cake.
I really wanted to be cool enough to embrace this non-traditional shade. I discovered I'm not. It's a gorgeous color that complements my brown eyes, and I also think it would look beautiful with every eye color. Conceptually. I do like Big Fatty's Black Cherry color, but it feels costumey/stagey and too bold for me.
On the few occasions I've thrown caution to the wind, and faced the day with Black Cherry lashes, not a single person reacted. Banish the thought that the people in my life are simply too polite to voice their opinion, for they are not. Unless prompted with "by the way, what do you think of this colored mascara?", it's not so distracting for most to notice. I really have to remind myself that no one scrutinizes me as much as I scrutinize myself. The color is a matter of personal style, and Urban Decay delivers the promise of drama for any eye color.
One last issue with the color is that my bottom lashes are very long and I usually avoid using mascara. It's too messy! Possibly, no, probably, I'm simply not adroit with even the most fabulous applicator and the lack of product on my bottom lash line is an odd contrast to the top lash line. Nothing I couldn't fix --- I remedied the situation by coloring (like you would with a crayon) my lower lashes with a burgundy eye pencil. Thanks for the tip Julie/lllovemakeup!
My buying decision was also influenced by Urban Decay's Cruelty Free commitment and high expectations based upon previous positive experiences with other Urban Decay products. They're not a vegan company, but a visit to the website will demonstrate a wide variety of vegan products, easily identified by a purple paw print. Big Fatty is not vegan.
Big Fatty is packaged in a traditional mascara tube, dressed up in Urban Decay purple, and wrapped in a trippy "black cherry" paisley print label with equally trippy font. The label shade echoes the mascara shade, and it's a good representation. The dimensions of the tube are 3 1/2" long, about the width of a dime, and this slightly squat design (therefore shorter wand), promotes exceptional control. The inch long brush, tapered at the end to grab those teeny tiny inner corner lashes, is a tight spiral configuration with full bushy bristles for quick coverage. Combined, the design and formula facilitate a smooth, even, clump-free, flake-free application. Big Fatty has a consistency similar to gel that dries quickly and is more receptive to building layers. NOT THAT layers will help...
"Extra thickening powers" and "insane layers" are quoted verbatim from Urban Decay's description of the wonders of Big Fatty Colored Mascara, but that wasn't my experience. Layering resulted in not much more than more vibrant color, and the need to lightly comb through my lashes after the third application. There is the illusion of added volume from depositing color, but my lashes didn't look exceptionally full. Big Fatty is a big exaggeration.
Urban Decay Big Fatty Colored Mascara is a long lasting formula that wears like waterproof mascara without the extra effort required to remove waterproof formulas. The finish is slightly glossy, and my lashes felt flexible and soft to the touch. My eyes are sensitive but I didn't experience any irritation with the formula, nor does it create any problems with wearing contacts. I can wear Big Fatty all day without worrying about smearing or smudging, and it still looks fresh by the time I'm ready to turn in for the night. Big Fattydoesn't make any claims about lengthening or curling lashes, so I can't really be disappointed that it doesn't! On the other hand, the very light blond tips of my lashes should appear longer simply because of the application of color, but the vibrant color seems to read shorter.
Urban Decay Big Fatty Colored Mascara in Black Cherry isn't all bad news! Above average to excellent qualities would include great pigment, clean application, and longlasting wear offset by that pesky, underwhelming demonstration of volume. I won't repurchase because I'm willing to compromise on volume or curl, but not both. If color is the only quality you're seeking, Urban Decay Big Fatty Colored Mascara is a good choice. Tough call, but I'm going to say this is a below average product despite some 5 star qualities, and one that I can't recommend universally.
