| patch3boys's Full Review: Usaopoly Monopoly - Scooby Doo Fright Fest Edition... |
If you were to ask my kids what their favorite thing to do on Family Night was, you would hear a loud and resounding "Monopoly" from them all! Our family has been playing Monopoly together for as long as I can remember. We have had many special nights together crowded around that silly Monopoly board. It just seems to be the one game that everyone in my family (both old and young alike) enjoy playing. All you would have to do is take one look at our much loved Monopoly set to see just how much use we have gotten out of that thing. Our family Monopoly nights and the special memories we have made will forever be etched in my mind and hopefully in my children's minds as well.
Many different Deluxe Monopoly sets and Special Editions sets have come and gone, but we have never felt the need to have anything more than our plain "ol faithful" that we purchased almost 10 years ago. As ripped as the board is, as bent as the cards are and as crinkled and crumbled as the money is, we just couldn't get ourselves to part with it. That is until I just couldn't say NO, to Scooby Doo! Man am I a softie when it comes to that silly old mutt!
For Christmas this year, we decided to get my middle son (who is one of the biggest Scooby Doo fanatics you'll ever meet) Monopoly Scooby-Doo! Collector's Edition. We didn't throw away our old board (as that would be like throwing away too many treasured memories) but instead we safety tucked it away in the back of our game cabinet to make room for a Scooby Doo Edition, of one of the best board games ever made, Monopoly. We have now started some new memories, Scooby Doo style!
When I got ready to write this review I ended up with a "mystery" of my own on my hands. I searched the Internet high and low to find Monopoly Scooby-Doo! Collector's Edition, but couldn't find it anywhere. All that kept popping up on my searches were the Scooby-Doo! Fright Fest Edition. The only place I could find where the box top was written in way mine was, was on eBay. Even at USAopology.com (where the game was created) they only made mention to the Fright Fest edition. I found that weird since I had just bought our game from them this past December. I wrote to the company to find out why I was having such trouble finding my edition. It turns out that the Collector's Edition and Fright Fest are one in the same. Both have exactly the same contents, pieces, cards and board, only a different box top. Apparently the Collector's edition box top was only changed for a short time during 2002. I was assured (by the company who made the game) that the two were exactly the same.
Playing the Scooby Version works in the same way as the regular version does but has a fun twist to it. It just wouldn't be Scooby Doo if there wasn't an exciting adventure and mystery to solve. In this game, you are in a race to take control of The Creeper's Bell Tower, the Gypsy's house of Tarot Cards and The Witch Doctor's Island. Buy Snack Shakes and Dine and Dash Diners, win haunts and funny money and try your darndest to bankrupt your opponents to win the game. Just like any monopoly game, it is all about the last man (or dog I should say in this case) standing.
Your game will come with the Game board, Title Deed Cards, Custom Scooby Doo money and bankers tray, Ruh Ruh! and Zoinks cards (which are like the Chance and Community Chest cards in the original game), 32 Snack Shacks and 12 Dine & Dash Diners (these would be sorta comparable to the houses and hotels in the original monopoly), Dice, rules and 6 Custom Pewter character tokens: Scooby-Doo, Shaggy, Velma, Fred, Daphne and the Mystery Machine. Now here is where we always have a big dilemma, Yes, my family can even find one in something as simple as choosing a Monopoly piece. Surprise, Surprise ... everyone wants to be Scooby-Doo! We have to go through the tears, the screams, the accusations, the dirty looks, the throwing of oneself on the floor ... the whole ball and wax, just to decide who gets to be Scooby Doo. All this over a piece of metal. Sheesh, what's wrong with being Fred? Why doesn't anyone ever want to be Velma? We now have a new rule in our house. We automatically roll for the "honor" of being Scooby Doo before we even start setting up the game. If I hear even one sigh at the results, game night is cancelled! I had to do something to keep the peace.
Overall (Scooby- Doo! dueling aside) we have absolutely loved our Scooby Doo edition Monopoly. The Scooby-Doo Mystery solving twist has been a nice change of pace for our cherished Monopoly game.
All parts and pieces are made of good quality material. It has a nice sturdy game board, which I feel is important for a game that gets played frequently. All the other parts and pieces are made in the same way as any other monopoly game. Of course you will end up with crumpled money and bent Deed cards if you don't supervise your children and make sure that everything is treated right, but you will have that with any game that is not taken care of.
It is a bit expensive (compared to the original monopoly; probably almost double the price) but again that is typical and common of all the collector editions.
To our family, purchasing the Scooby-Doo Fright Fest collectors edition was a great move. USAopoly did a fantastic job of customizing this version, making a fun "mystery" adventure and detailing all the pieces and parts to resemble our ever so loved pup. This will be one of the games that will be kept in the treasure volt of my children's child hood games and toys to hopefully one day be shared with their own children.
Visit USAonopoly.com to see this version and many others of one of the worlds most loved games, Monopoly.
