Pros: Tastes good, contains a lot of vitamins and antioxidants
Cons: Contains Splenda
I am an impulse buyer at the grocery store. I know I spend a lot more money when I don't shop from my list, but when I'm dieting I don't always know what diet foods are available until I see them on the store shelves.
I picked up Diet V8 Splash, in the Tropical Blend flavor, on a whim last week. It was sitting on an end of an aisle display, and was on sale for only $2.00, which caught my attention, as that's a great price. I didn't even notice the "Diet" on the front, but when I read the label and saw that it only contains 10 calories per 8 ounce glass, I knew it had to be a diet drink.
~ Description ~
This comes in a large clear plastic jug, and holds 64 ounces. The Tropical Splash is the color of a mango, and the label says that it contains antioxidants, plus vitamins A, C, and E.
I didn't notice it at the time of purchase, but now that I am writing this review, I do see that the label also tells us that it's a beverage made up of 5 juices and mango puree from concentrate.
The sides are indented with ridges, which makes it easier to hold, and the cap screws off so you can pour it easily.
The product, despite it's claims, only contains 8% real fruit juice.
~ Thoughts ~
I didn't know until now that V8 is made by the Campbell Soup Company! The little Campbell child is wearing a graduation hat and holds a sign that reads "Labels for Education", which is part of the Campbells program.
This juice does contain sucralose, or Splenda, so that's how it stays so low in calories. Despite that, this isn't bad tasting. I usually have an after taste when I drink any beverage with artificial sweeteners in it, but this one doesn't bother me as much. It would make a fantastic punch if you blended this with a little bit of ginger ale and floated some orange sherbet on top!
I taste the mango in this drink more than I do any other fruit, although when I read the ingredient label, I am very impressed with what Campbells put into this drink!! It is a nice blending of fruits, making it almost taste like a punch in my mind. If I were to change anything, I'd make it just a little less sweet and a bit more tart, but it's not too bad.
The ingredients are:
Water, carrot juice from concentrate, apple juice concentrate, pineapple juice concentrate, kiwi juice concentrate, lime juice concentrate, and then the rest of the ingredients, which contains less than 2% of: malic acid, natural flavor, mango puree concentrate, potassium citrate, vitamin C, vitamin E, beta carotene, Splenda, and acesulfame potassium.
You'd think that with those ingredients, there would be more than 8% juice in this beverage, but much of the concentrate ingredients have water next to them. When you think about it, there is a lot of natural water in fruit itself.
I feel this is a very healthy beverage, when you take out the Splenda (I'm not a huge proponent of artificial sweeteners, especially Splenda). It provides 100% of your daily allowance of vitamin A and C, and 20% of your vitamin E. It only has 2 grams of sugar, and is low in sodium (40mg), and gives you 100mg of potassium!
This is definitely a better choice than drinking a soda pop, which is full of empty calories, and this even tastes better, in my opinion.
Diet V8 Splash comes in a few other flavors, such as Berry Blend, Strawberry Kiwi, and Fruit Medley. I want to try them all!
I have to give this one 5 stars, removing one star because it doesn't taste quite as good as beverages with sugar instead of Splenda.
