Pros: Helps heal dry and chapped skin, hypo-allergenic and non-comedogenic.
Cons: Feels greasy.
I don't know about anyone else, but I suffer from dry skin. My skin goes from okay to dried and cracking in the drop of a hat, especially during the winter time. My hands and feet, not to mention my lips, are the worst. The best thing that I have found, that helps clear up the dryness the fastest, is Vaseline 100% Pure Petroleum Jelly.
Vaseline 100% Pure Petroleum Jelly, at least the container that I purchased, comes in a plastic, slightly tinted, 7.5oz jar with a blue plastic lid. The lid just snaps off and on, keeping it up out of reach of children is a good idea. The Vaseline 100% Pure Petroleum Jelly, itself, is clear. No taste and no odor.
According to the packaging, Vaseline 100% Pure Petroleum Jelly is good for minor cuts, scrapes and burns and it also heals dryness. I have only used it on burned and dry skin, so I can't account it's effectiveness on cuts and scrapes. I use Neosporin for that.
When using Vaseline 100% Pure Petroleum Jelly on my hands and feet, I always put it on right before bedtime and I always follow it up with a pair of socks, so I don't get it all over the sheets. My heels are the part of my feet that really get bad, so I slather it on heavy and pull on a pair of socks. Same with my hands. Yes, I put socks on my hands. I keeps the Vaseline 100% Pure Petroleum Jelly on my skin and not all over everything else.
Why do I wait for bedtime? Vaseline 100% Pure Petroleum Jelly works great, but it leaves you feeling greasy. I also can't wear socks on my hands and function around the house. I'd rather not leave a greasy handprint on everything I touch, so I just wait until bedtime. That way the Vaseline 100% Pure Petroleum Jelly has the most time to soak in and to work.
The burns that we have used Vaseline 100% Pure Petroleum Jelly on have been sunburns. They're usually fairly mild, just a hint of pink. I usually take a cool shower, to help take some of the heat out of the burn, then apply a thin layer of Vaseline 100% Pure Petroleum Jelly. I always wear some kind of cotton shirt over it. Either a sleep shirt or t-shirt, rather than my usual nightgown. This way it helps breathe, but still keeps the Vaseline 100% Pure Petroleum Jelly on my skin and off of my sheets.
Does it work? It works great! After just one night of using Vaseline 100% Pure Petroleum Jelly, my hands or feet are 50% better than they were the night before. For my cracked heels, this can be the difference between walking comfortably or limping to keep weight off of my heels. As for my hands, they are softer and aren't cracked. Going about my daily business as a stay at home mom is more comfortable. Getting my hands wet, or using a baby wipe, no longer burns.
As for the sunburns, it won't do miracles. The Vaseline 100% Pure Petroleum Jelly does, however, help put moisture back into the skin and helps prevent peeling. My skin, as well as my husband's and son's, is very fair. I don't tan, I burn. Peeling skin is not attractive. I feel like a lizard. While it does take a little bit of the sting out, and helps me sleep more comfortably, it usually just keeps me from peeling.
I also use Vaseline 100% Pure Petroleum Jelly on my lips. This drives my husband bonkers, but it works better than a lot of other products. I keep it next to the bed and apply it after my good night kiss from my husband. I have, on occasion, also smeared it on my son's lips. I usually have to sneak in after he is asleep and gently rub it on. He hates having anything put on him, especially Vaseline 100% Pure Petroleum Jelly since it is greasy. He will lick and suck on his lips until they are cracked and then pick at them until they bleed. He can't help it. It's a nervous action that he uses, or when he gets bored. The Vaseline 100% Pure Petroleum Jelly helps heal them up overnight so as to lessen the damage.
Another way that I use Vaseline 100% Pure Petroleum Jelly is on my cats. Several years ago I had a cat that got hairballs. He didn't get them often, but when he did it almost made me gag to hear him walking around the house retching. The vet said that by applying a very small amount to his paw, he would like it off and it would help pass the hairball. He said that most hairball remedies are petroleum based with some added flavor so that, in theory, the cats would eat it. Since the Vaseline 100% Pure Petroleum Jelly tends to stick to the paw better than some of the hairball remedies I have tried, I have had better luck with it. Since it is almost tasteless, my cats lick it off without a problem. It doesn't perform miracles here, either, but it's better than the $5 tubes I have purchased that, with one quick flick of the paw, the contents go flying across the room! I just don't use it very often. Just when we get desperate! Oh, and they have their own jar. I refuse to use the Vaseline 100% Pure Petroleum Jelly after I use it on them. That's just gross!
Do I recommend the Vaseline 100% Pure Petroleum Jelly? Yes. While the jar might be a little expensive, it lasts a really long time! The multiple uses also makes it a bargain in the long run! Every member of you family can use it in a number of ways!
