Pros:Provides quick relief, easy to use, no offensive medicinal smell.

Cons:Can be messy if over applied.

The Bottom Line: Feminine itching isn’t something that you need to suffer through; Vagisil sees to it that you get the relief that you need.

Feminine itching is a subject that makes even the toughest guys turn to mush. I think this topic ranks right up there with tampons, child birth and shopping trips to Ikea. Everyone gets an itch from time to time, that’s only normal – but when that itch turns into something that is painful, makes urination a torturous event and you dread sitting down then it’s time to reach for the Vagisil. So what causes vaginal itching? It can come from a variety of things – an irritating piece of clothing, allergic reaction to a laundry detergent or softener, the onset of a yeast infection, too close of a shave, wet underwear or the after effects of a hot wax – just to name a few. I had to grab a tube of this about a year ago when I had a bad rash from an allergic reaction to a pair of underwear; stupid me didn’t wash them before I put them on and went to the gym and I paid the price for it about an hour later. Sitting in Burger King eating my bun-free hamburgers I started to feel a slight burning sensation that escalated over the next ten minutes. I almost passed out when I went in the bathroom and looked down, my entire groin area was beet red and oddly enough, it mimicked the exact pattern of the underwear I was wearing. A quick call to the urgent care clinic helped to settle my nerves and after I was checked out I was told that it was indeed an allergic reaction to the dye, or rather the over dyed material. They gave me the option to go to the drug store and pick up a tube of this or have them write me a prescription for something then have to wait to have it filled. I opted for the first choice since I couldn’t see me standing on line waiting in the state I was in at the time.

Vagisil Anti Itch Creme – Original Formula

The first thing that you need to know about this product is that it is not a cure for yeast infections, it will help to make the itching that can accompany it but it will not cure it. Some of the yeast infection medications on the market today come with a small tube of a topical creme to treat this type of itch so make sure you read the package to see if another medication is needed or not. Vagisil Anti Itch Creme is just that, a creme that helps to stop itching. This is for external use only so do not apply it internally, I am guilty of using this semi-internally – a politically correct term for the labia, but that was a personal choice I made so don’t mistake it for advice. This shouldn’t be used internally – meaning inside the vaginal tract. Why? It could throw off the fauna of the vaginal and lead to a yeast infection. The feminine hygiene system is a delicate one and things like antibiotics and other medications, chaffing, unprotected sex or sex with a latex condom, douching, chlorine from swimming pools and general poor hygiene can all lead to “the itch”.

This product works due to the two main ingredients - benzocaine and resorcinol. Benzocaine is used a topical numbing agent and resorcinol is added to help clear up any type of rash or skin irritation that may be present. When you combine both of these ingredients you end up with a very good medication for treating inflamed areas, in this case, the southern female region of the body. Resorcinol is a common drug in acne medications and after doing some research on it I found that it has few side effects when used in moderation but many sites and doctors suggest that when using this, either as a stand alone drug or in a combination type packaging such as this product, you should refrain from using any type of harsh soap or anything that is scented since that could further irritate your already fragile skin. Benzocaine is common in items like burn relief ointments, tooth ache medications, teething gels for babies and those who are having pain from orthodontic appliances and general pain relieving first aid cremes. The doses of both active ingredients are in minimal amounts however if you are allergic to either, ask your doctor for a suitable alternative.

Ingredients

Some people think that it’s just downright foolish to go into any kind of detail about this kind of stuff; to me I’d rather cover all the bases than to have someone think that this will work for them only to find out that they are allergic to one of the ingredients. So for those interested, here’s the scoop on what’s in this product:

Benzocaine 5%, resorcinol 2%, water, cetyl alcohol, glyceryl stearate [emulsified and binding agent], PEG-100 [polyethylene glycol], stearate, mineral oil, isopropyl palmitate, triethanolamine [added to help adjust the pH level], isopropyl myristate, isopropyl stearate, Sodium Sulfite, Trisodium HEDTA, Lanolin Alcohol, Methylparaben, tocopheryl acetate [vitamin E], aloe, retinyl palmitate, cholecalciferol [vitamin D3], Corn Oil.

If you are someone that has a ton of allergies it’s best to read the label and ask your doctor before you use this product. If you already have inflamed skin, adding something to it that you are allergic to will only make it worse as well as have it pass through the skin quicker. On a side note, this is something that can be used for break outs and irritation for those who are incontinent or experience urine leakage. The moisture barriers and vitamins in this will help to not only soothe the area but promote a quicker recovery time.

Directions

As mentioned, this is for external use. Apply this to a cleaned area and give it a few minutes to ‘soak in’. I’ve never had a problem with this staining clothing or getting really messy but if you over do it and lather it on, it will get sticky. Squeeze out a small amount on your finger, apply it to the effected area and wash hands well. There’s no smell or scent to this, at least none that I could pick up one but you will want to make sure that you wash your hands before and after using this. The actual amount that you will need to use depends on the area that you need to treat, if you are having a bad outbreak you might need to use more than the suggested one inch strip. I get the best results applying a small amount then adding more if needed, otherwise you can end up with a real mess, especially if you have to get dressed right away. Avoid using this right after a shower or bath since your skin will be sensitive, wait about ten minutes and if possible refrain from wearing clothing for a short period of time to allow it to go to work and not get rubbed off.

Price

You can find the once ounce tube for about four dollars at most drug and grocery stores. If you shop at places like Wal-Mart and Target you can find it for a little less but most of the time when you need a product like this it’s in an emergency situation and money isn’t usually a factor. Is it worth it? To me it is; as someone that gets itching from sitting in wet gym clothes and the occasional yeast infection, it’s nice to have a tube of this on hand when it’s needed. Before I used this I stuck it out and suffered for a few days until the itch and rash went away but looking back on it, it was my own stubbornness and the stigma that surrounds these types of products [poor hygiene] that kept me from trying it out. There are store brands of Vagisil but when it comes to something as sensitive as my nether region, I’m not going to scrimp.

Things To Know

• This is the original formula, if this product doesn’t give you any relief from itching you may want to try the maximum strength version. The maximum strength version contains 20% benzocaine and 3% resorcinol, much larger amounts than what are found in this version of Vagisil.

• If you are having recurring itching that is accompanied by a white clumpy, cottage cheese like discharge you may have a yeast infection. This product will not cure a yeast infection but it will, for a limited amount of time, help with the itching that accompanies it. Yeast infections, if left untreated, could be spread to sexual partners and other parts of the body.

• Women who are pregnant will want to check with their doctor before using this product, especially if the itching is accompanied by the white discharge or any foul smell. Chances are your doctor will say that it’s ok to use this but it is better to be safe and check than to be sorry.

• To read about all the products in the Vagisil line, visit their official website at www.vagisil.com. The site offers you a guide to picking out the best product for your need as well as an informative section for teens.

The Bottom Line

If you are suffering from feminine itch this is a great product to use to get some relief but it’s important to know what you are dealing with. If this is the first time you are experiencing a strong itch or an itch that lasts for more than a few hours or is accompanied by other symptoms you may want to call your doctor to see if there is something else going on. This won’t give you immediate relief but you should notice a significant drop in the pain and discomfort in about five minutes. For the price this is a quick fix for a serious problem and if you’ve never had any type of persistent itch, consider yourself lucky. One of the biggest misconceptions about feminine itch is that it is due to poor hygiene, while this can be a contributing factor to the situation there are a lot of other things that could cause it.

As always, thanks for the visit …
