let's start off with some facts:
1. vegan food is food prepared without animal products of any kind. (i.e. no meat, no eggs, no dairy, etc.)
2. vegan food tends to taste like cr*p.
(at least, it does to me.)
Valentine's changed my view of vegan food forever. Though they call themselves a vegetarian restaurant, most of their meals are cooked vegan with the option of adding something like cheese, milk, or butter if you want.
Most vegan food I've had is very bland. It seems that there's so much focus on avoiding animal stuff that there's no energy left to think about richness and flavor. The pleasure of the food is in doing something good for the world or your body and not in the actual sensory experience of the food.
Luckily, Valentine's gives you both. Their menu is really varied and everything I've had there is very tasty. They're very reasonably priced for SF. I had brunch (pancakes, muffins, coffee) for around $7. I had a really good dinner (pasta, wine, dessert, coffee) for around $17.
In particular, they have amazing brunch on the weekends and superb desserts. Their weekly (or maybe daily) fruit pancakes are wonderful. (last weekend I had banana and mango with pecans) Also, their coffee might be the best I've had in SF. It's at least in the top 3.
The service is excellent. Every waitperson I've had has been attentive, friendly, and fun.
To sum up, Valentine's is good, healthy, and tasty food. It's a place I'm going to make a habit of going to, especially on the weekends. It just happens to be vegan/vegetarian.
