| mmcphee's Full Review: Valterra Wheel Chocks |
We recently purchased our first travel trailer. Of course the purchase of said trailer means entering a whole new world of accessories. For better or worse we have a well stocked RV store just a couple of miles from our home with a sales staff ready to help us outfit our new-to-us toy. While not one of the more exciting purchases, Valterra Chocks were a good investment.
Chocks Out! Chocks are essentially blocks that prevent your wheels from rolling. There are several different styles; the Valterra Wheel Chocks are triangular plastic wedges that go on both sides of tires to prevent the wheels from rolling. The base of Valterra Wheel Chocks is approximately 8” X 5” with a ridged bottom to help hold it in place. The 4” high angled blocking surface is also ridged. A nylon cord is attached to make the chocks easy to carry and the bright red color make them easy to spot.
For the 11 nights we camped, our Valterra Wheel Chocks certainly did their job by keeping the trailer from rolling or sliding. We also had jacks to keep the trailer level and steady, but the chocks provided extra support and degree of stability. We could have just used some of the cinder blocks in our backyard. However, they will eventually pay for themselves (at $5 each) by reducing the weight we carry. Total the chocks probably weight no more than a couple of pounds, compared to the weight of cinder blocks. Overall no complaints. The chocks certainly did what we wanted them to do; keep the trailer from rolling.
While I am quite sure you could drive over these chocks if you put your mind (and transmission) into it, my husband states that they offer quite a bit of resistance when you try and pull out of your campsite without removing the chocks from the trailer wheels first. Apparently that bright, easy to spot red isn’t quite obvious enough. However, no damage was done to either the trailer or the chocks. This was $20 well spent.
