| DarbyWalters's Full Review: Vector Multi-Function Jump Start System VEC021 |
I have had the Vector Multi-Function Jump Start System for quite some time now (I now have three similar units). I first purchased the unit to help in my business. I have large moving trucks that sometimes need a jump start and are not always in a good position to pull another vehicle close enough for Jumper Cables. Since purchasing the Vector, it has more than paid for itself.
The Vector comes with a charger that plugs into a wall outlet and charges slowly. You can also use a cigarette lighter charge cord and charge it while you drive. It charges quickly using this method. It has a light that indicates when it is fully charged. When charging from a wall outlet, you do not have to worry about overcharging. When charging from you vehicle, you do need to watch the light to see when it is fully charged. You don't have to charge the unit constantly because it holds a full charge for months while it waits to rescue you.
If you know that your battery is low, you can plug the unit into your vehicle's cigarette lighter outlet and it will actually charge your battery. I haven't used this function so I can't really comment on how well it works. I can say that it easily jumps my Isuzu NPR Turbo Diesels (twin batteries) without any arguments. The 200W of extra juice seems to do the job on low batteries. It is also so compact that my movers take one with them when traveling out-of-town. It fits right behind the seat and does not emit any fumes since it is a completely sealed unit.
I even purchased one for personal use. I use it when I go camping or 4Wheelin' in my Jeep Liberty. Instead of using my Jeep battery up for spot lights, cell phones, electric tire pumps, radios, ect., I use this unit and just charge it up the next day while 4Wheelin'. It even has a light built in! It has also helped Jump Start another Jeep in a position that would have been difficult at best to get another vehicle close enough to Jump Start off. You can also hook up a radio to it and not have to run an electrical cord...great for picnics and backyard parties. You can also run 110V AC household current with the adapter to ground.
The best thing about the unit is that you won't require another vehicle to assist you in getting up and running. The other great thing about the unit is that it is safer than Jump Starting from another vehicle. Jumping from other vehicles can cause electrical problems and if you reverse the cables you can cause an explosion. This is especially important if you decide to help a stranded motorist. With this unit, the cables are marked clearly so it is unlikely to create a bad situation. It also has a "Reverse Polarity" warning system to let you know the cables are reversed.
The first time you use this unit, it will pay for itself. You can Jump Start yourself and then plug it into the cigarette lighter outlet and help your battery out until you get to the parts house for a new battery. Remember, there is not always help within 5 minutes of your location. If you vehicle still won't start and the battery is dead, you can still plug your cell phone in and call for help. I will not travel without one!
