Pros: Cute, washable, easy to turn on
Cons: Hard plastic means he's not entirely cuddly
For the past two years I have been living with a cast of imaginary Vegetables. Its probably not what you think. You see, my three and a half year old has been a Veggie Tales? addict since she was just over a year old. It was not really a surprise when she started talking and her fourth word (after the standard Mom, Dad, Ball) was Bob, as in Bob the Tomato of VeggieTales fame! From there the fun grew as she acquired imaginary friends, eventually including Laura, the Grapes of Wrath, Bob, Larry, and, of course, Junior. As a result, we have a lot of Veggie Tales? merchandise in our house and didnt really need yet another talking vegetable. Still, when we found Junior Asparagus Bedtime Friend in the clearance isle of our favorite store, we knew we had to buy him.
To those already familiar with Veggie Tales?, the above paragraph probably made sense. You may want to skip ahead to the next section. For those who are still wondering why any three year old would talk to vegetables, read on.
Veggie Tales? are singing and talking fruits and vegetables. Merchandise is based on the animated video series which come complete with lessons on Christian values without being preachy or boring. Veggie Tales? Junior Asparagus Bedtime Friend is based on the video Where is God when Im Scared?.
Junior Asparagus Bedtime Friend
God is bigger than the boogey man. Hes bigger than Godzilla or the monsters on tv.
This song is the premise for the toy. Of course, with his big glowing eyeballs, those not familiar with Junior Asparagus, may not find him the Bedtime Friend he promises to be. When his tummy is pressed, his eyes light up and he says Im not scared and then hums La, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la to the tune of God is Bigger than the Boogey Man. As a night light, he is likely not the best choice since his eyes glow only while he is humming about 20 seconds.
Although the Epinions title is Junior Glow Light our box describes him as Junior Asparagus Bedtime Friend even though he looks identical to the above picture. Junior Asparagus Bedtime Friend stands about 9 tall and is mostly made of green plush material, although his eyes, which glow when his tummy is pressed, are made of hard plastic and there is a Velcro strip along his back which allows access to the batteries (3 AAA, which are included). He wears an attached yellow nightcap which is meant to resemble his trademark day time cap. As an added bonus he is machine washable if you remove the battery and light unit.
Although my three year old thought he was cute, she wasnt too upset when her one year old sister claimed him. Junior Asparagus Bedtime Friend is recommended for ages 3 and up, which seems a little extreme. He has no removable parts and everything is carefully secured. If my VeggieTales? loving three year old lost interest that quickly, Im sure that most three year olds would soon toss this toy to the bottom of the stuffed animal heap. On the other hand, my one year old absolutely adores him. As soon as I put her to bed, she grabs Junior and hugs him, then starts to la, la, la along with him. The reason this toy has likely been given a higher age rating is because of his weight. His hard plastic eyes and the fact that there are batteries encased in his body make him quite solid and not entirely cuddly.
Some parents may choose to take this toy away once a child is asleep simply because there is no volume control or off switch and he can go off in the middle of the night if bumped. Fortunately, my children are sound sleepers (as am I) and, although I hear the odd humming noises coming out of my daughters room during nap time, it isnt loud enough to wake her.
Requires 3 AAA batteries included
Recommended for ages 3 and up
