Dbbum's Full Review: BIC America Velocity Gel Retractable Roller Ball P...
For the last few years ink pens have made a dramatic advancement to gel ink, with sleek comforting designs. Throughout high school I used many different types of liquid ink pens, which had a terrible ink flow, and would bleed through most notebook paper. I almost needed a portable clothes line to hang the paper on after a solid 10 minutes of note taking. Since then gel ink has taken over, making for a more delightful and cleaner writing experience. Last year I picked up a new style from Bic called Bic Velocity Gel Retractable Roller Ball Pen. It features a refillable gel ink tank, retractable roller ball head, and a thin rubber grip for added comfort.
This particular brand features black ink, black support grip, and a black retractable clicker on top. The rest of the pen design is somewhat transparent, with a cloudy white color. When held up to a light, you can see the inside of the pen (springs, ink tank, ink stopper, etc.) Even with the transparent color you still cannot see the level of ink inside the tank, because of the rubber grip. I've used these pens for several months and the ink level never moves, it's as if the ink permanently stained the ink tank. The only way to tell when you're out of ink is when the pen stops writing.
The best feature is the gel ink and roller ball application (0.7mm size). Unlike some other gel ink pens, the Bic Velocity Gel Retractable Roller Ball Pen has a constant ink flow which never skips or clogs. The roller ball does tend to gunk up on the outside sometimes, but the gel ink still flows normally. A few wipes with a tissue or scrap piece of paper fixes this problem everytime. The rubber support grip also makes the pen easy to handle, especially if your writing hand tends to cramp. The grip is built into the pen design, which is slim and sleek unlike some other grip which bulge out waaay to far.
I typically use this pen for residential applications (checks, checkbook, calendar, post it notes, etc). The gel ink has never bled through any types of paper, not even the cheap white notebook paper or yellow legal pads. However the gel ink takes up to 30 seconds to completely dry. If you are taking notes and don't allow the ink to dry you could smear previous lettering. This is true of most gel ink pens though. The ink also applies with little to no pressure, unlike some liquid ink pens which require you to be a constant in the Strong Man competition just to apply one stroke full of ink. Obviously the more pressure you apply the more fulfilled your lettering will be, but a light stroke will usually do the job.
The Bic Velocity Gel Retractable Roller Ball Pen is my new favorite pen, and at such a low cost it's easy to stock up on them. I've seen then sold in most retail stores: Wal-mart, Staples, Office Depot, and even in grocery stores. For less than $3.00 you can get a 2pack, which is a normal price for gel ink pens. If that seems a bit expensive, the comfort more than makes up for the price. If you're a business and need a load of pens, I've also seen them sell for $1.10 - 1.30 each on some online stores (bichq.com, bicpens.com).
