| nephi1's Full Review: Velodyne CHT-12 Subwoofer Speaker |
I recently purchased the CHT12 to supplement my home theater. I am using it in conjunction w/ a smaller sub woofer produced by Energy.
The intent of the purchase was to move more air at lower frequencies, simply put. Since I use my system primarily for movies, I was really looking to shake the house, on a budget. I do enjoy music. Unfortunately, though, my limited experience has taught me that musical and theatrical excellence are not available in the same box on a budget. Some people may say that such qualities never co-exist. What ever your perspective may be, I have made home theater my priority.
Upon getting the CHT12 home, I was immediately impressed with its relatively deep and powerful output. I ran it individually first to get to know the sub, so to speak. It definitely was an improvement over my Energy S8.2 (eight inch driver.) Coupled with the Energy, I'm pretty close to shaking the house!
Here is the deal on the CHT12, in my humble opinion. We're talking about a $500.00 powered sub woofer. In keeping that perspective, I would have to say that it has got some "bang for your buck." It reproduces pretty low frequencies at pretty high volume. It's not the fastest sub on the market, though. I have definitely heard more accurate sub woofers. Roughly translated, the sub is very effective for theatrical reproduction and a little less effective for musical reproduction. It is very good with straight forward bass like explosions, and such. Anything complex, like the constant and subtle note changes of a symphony, and your ears might start to strain a little bit. The question is, whether you can find a better twelve inch sub on the market for $500.00. Probably not. I, this very minute, have the B&W ASW 600 in my home for direct comparison to the Velodyne (It is on loan from a wonderful local high-end store in town.) The B&W is far more accurate than the Velodyne. But, it's a ten inch driver. Ah, the dilemma. The price is the same. But, what will be my compromise? I think I'll stick with the less accurate 12 for my home theater.
