What the game is about
Velvet Assassin is a stealth action game, meaning your sneaking around instead of running up to someone and shooting them. This is a lot like the Tom Clancey and Hit Man series games in the way that you must sneak around and obtain info. This game was inspired by a real person during World War 2 Violette Szabo. She is a spy that has "flashbacks" when she was injured by a German sniper. The game starts you out in a bed in the hospital where you must kill Nazis and complete mission's to find out what really happened to you. The game takes place in World War 2 so there are some pretty crazy parts in the game. They kind of focus on the horrors during World War 2 Mixing stealth action games with older settings always brings out some fun. Even though I'm not much into the Stealth games Velvet Assassin was a very fun game to play.
Graphics
The graphics in Velvet Assassin look very good. The lighting in the cinematic movies look awesome. The scenery usually looks beautiful and richly detailed with a "weird dark" look to it. There are many different settings the environment takes place prison's, ghetto's, port's, churches and the country side. Dark rooms look very good when your sneaking behind someone the lighting takes affect and the room looks great. They really did a good job detailing the graphics to a higher level. This game looks very good on a high def tv. Buildings and people look realistic instead of a corny video game town. Blood and guts look very good on the floor as on the screen. Graphic quality gets a 9/10 not as good as crisis but looks very good. The graphics help keep this a good silent action paced game I thought the graphics were great.
Sound
The sound quality is also very good as well. Voice expressions were done very well in Velvet Assassin. There are all sort's of spooky sounds that keep you anticipating what's going to happen next. You can hear small sound's, what I mean is you can hear the smallest noises that many video games don't apply. Music is good and gets you in the video game mode. There is not some plain boring music that keeps playing over and over again. The sound runs really great with what your doing, there is no sound delay no matter what is happening. I am giving Velvet Assassin a 9/10 for it's sound quality. I really enjoyed the quality of the game.
Game play
The stealthiness in this game takes it to a whole new level. It's pretty detailed when it comes to hiding. There is a light factor a noise factor, and a chance of being randomly seen by the enemy. If you make the smallest sound or movement it could give away your position. Sometimes you can be hiding in a not so great spot and not be seen, other times you think, wow there never gonna see me here, then all of a sudden there everywhere. Stealth mode is easy to engage by a push of a button your there, killing people in stealth mode, well it's that easy to. You can kill people from poison, suffocation, electrocution, and well good old kill-in.
As you progress through the game you must level up your power's. In Morphine mode Viollete is in a hospital gown that is drenched in blood, while drop's of blood fall on the screen. For a limited time you can execute guard's or decide to run away. Unfortunately there is a limited use of this great ability. This is because time freezes and slows way down as you remain uninfected by the spell. There is also a blend stealth feature. If you put on a female SS uniform you will not be detected by the enemy. Unless you move to close to the guards then they'll know somethings up.
There are 3 places that you can upgrade your skill's. You can upgrade it in Morphine, Stealth, and power. There is a Hud that allows you to see what of the three stats you are in. Purple means that you are hidden, White means exposed but not detected, and Red which means you've been spotted if detected you must fight or run away.
What I thought
This was a game that I really enjoyed playing. It's fun to play a game that involves you sneaking around killing people in the dark. But I think that the AI needed more work done to it. It doesn't really react "fair, or "well" to what you do depending on the situation. That or the AI was to predictable, you could retry a mission and know what the computer is going to do most likely. It's not fun when you get spotted when you know there's no way that you did. The graphics are cool but the cinematic needed more work done to them as well. But the game play graphics are done very well which is why I gave a 9/10. For a sneak around game this is very fun, but it would of been more fun if they added a few more crazy off the wall things to go with it. A little imagination always does a sneak game good.
The mission's seemed like you were doing to much of the same thing, they needed to change it up a bit and added some extra mission's with a different style of play. I really liked this game but it needed more action in it to. I like some sneak games but It's the best when there are many enemy's to kill. The replay value of this game is good. You won't just play it once or twice but probably not more than 4 or 5 times.
Recommendation
I highly recommend this game to the sneak around kind of person. If your a gamer that prefers to slowly explore things while taking your time and getting yelled at by your friend's then this would be great. This is not a game for those that want to get things done in a rush, as you have to find certain objects to get to certain places. If your the kind of person that doesn't like to solve things you should probably stay away. I would not recommend this for a younger child or to someone that does not want there kids seeing graphic games. But if your up for the killing and realize your kids hear and see worse everyday at school then that wont matter. For those that aren't really into the sneak around games don't get this. For the whole game I would give it a 8/10. It was very fun looked and sounded great but just needed a little more done to it.
