HomeMediaBooksCharles H Elster - Verbal Advantage: Advanced Edition, Levels 6-10
Opinion Summary
Indispensable joy for any logophile!
by henry_thoreau | Nov 19 '06
Pros: Strategically selected and sequenced words are exhaustively, eruditely and entertainingly explained. Intermittent, brief, helpful reviews.
Cons: I wish the CD edition's track numbering corresponded exactly to the printed word-list numbering.

Tom, thanks for your kind words, and thanks for sharing the "Epinions-advisor allusion" (I'm still chuckling).

Actually, I can't honestly report that any of the words I happened to employ for this particular review were derived via my (so far) relatively modest usage of Verbal Advantage. You see, I earned my M.A. in English way back in early 1984, and (until '94) I was formerly a high school English teacher for some years. (Thank god for "early retirement"!) Thus, I suppose I should already evince at least a passing familiarity with the mother tongue. ;-)

Even so, there are numerous terms in the advanced levels of Verbal Advantage that I had never previously encountered; indeed, I need still more practice with those CDs before I can declare myself quite "finished" with Elster's program.

Thereafter (as Elster himself recommends during one of his supplementary discussions), I expect to expand my working vocabulary still further via the best of all possible means: judicious reading.

Thanks again for your input!

As Danielle/CopeSullivan suggests, it seems you really have been using this product.

As one 'books' Advisor has posted on her user-page:

"This review contains too many big words. I don't understand 'em, and so, I'm agin 'em!"

Hopefully not too many readers here will have that reaction. If they do, hopefully they will check out this product.

Very nicely done.

Gee, thanks for the compliment, Danielle. I'd thought I'd somewhat restrained my characteristic loquacity. ;-)

Might I just say (and this is a compliment mind you) that one just might need to purchase this in order to comprehensively read your review?!?!

Thank you, great review !
