Of all the different brands of DVD-R I've used, the Verbatim (94984) DVD-R Media has been a nightmarish experience. The rate of disk failures I had with this very model of DVD-r blank disk was beyond tolerable, and I don't believe it should be used for video recording.
While I have had good experiences with the Verbatim DigitalMovie DVD-r, I have been very disappointed with the Verbatim 94984 blank DVD-r disks. To record my DVDs I use both a computer-based Pioneer DVR-A05 burner and a set-top SONY RDR-VX500 for recording TV shows.
Every single DVD I used from this batch of Verbatim DVD-r can't be properly played back in any DVD player I tested. Disks skip, freeze, stutter, no matter what speed or recorder I used. The only time I did not experienced disk failure with this brand was when I used them exclusively for data storage. They seemed to be stable and responsive when used only for data. Unfortunately they can't be used for video, from what I gathered in my experience. I actually had to throw away all the disks I recorded.
Never had such a high failure rate from any other brand. I'm disappointed because I used the Verbatim DigitalMovie DVD-r media in the past and expected the same level of quality from this blank media.
