| jeavinl's Full Review: Viactiv Multi Vitamin, Chocolate Cherry, 60 Soft C... |
After being on prenatal vitamins for the past 5 years, I finally decided I was sick of swallowing giant pills in the morning and would hunt out a chewable alternative. At my local supermarket, I saw this box of "new" Viactiv Multi-Vitamins in Chocolate Cherry flavor. I had tried the milk chocolate calcium Viactiv supplements years ago and I thought I might like this.
Viactiv Multi-Vitamins are soft, chewable caramel-candy-like dietary supplements for women (though I'm sure the guys wouldn't suffer from a little extra calcium and folic acid). The formula is designed specifically to meet women's dietary needs and includes the usual list of vitamins and minerals: A, C, D, E, B6, B12, folic acid, calcium, thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, pantothenic acid, and biotin to help promote "heart health," "bone strength," "energy activation," "eye health," "skin health," and "immune health." A box of 60 individually wrapped chocolate cherry-flavored supplements sells for about $8 and can be found online and in stores where vitamins and supplements are found. Viactiv Multi-Vitamins are also available in milk chocolate flavor.
Ingredients: Corn Syrup, Sugar, Tricalcium Phosphate, Nonfat Milk, Chocolate Liquor, Cocoa Butter, Less than 2% of Sodium Ascorbate, Natural & Artificial Flavors, Alpha Tocopheryl, Salt, Niacinamide, Soy Lecithin, Calcium Pantothenate, Glyceryl Monostearate, Carrageenan, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Riboflavin, Thiamin Mononitrate, Sodium Phosphate, Vitamin A Palmitate, Folic Acid, Biotin, Cholecalciferol, Cyanocobalamin.
Although I think I eat a balanced diet and get all the necessary vitamins/minerals from food, I've also been known to eat a slice of pie for lunch on occasion so I thought I should try to keep up my supplements even now that I'm not pregnant or nursing. Considering I am still of child-bearing age and hubby has not gone for the ol' snip and tuck, I especially thought it important to make sure my body has everything it needs...just in case it needs it.
I've been taking these multi-vitamin supplements for about a month now, and I like them. It's a little weird to be chewing on a "candy" at breakfast time and the flavor has started to wear on me a little, but it still beats trying to push down and keep down a big pill on an almost-empty stomach in the morning. Personally, I'd love to see an assorted variety of these so that I'm not chewing on Chocolate Cherry every day.
The flavor is OK, it's chocolatey enough to satisfy my cravings with just a touch of cherry but it doesn't taste exactly like a chocolate covered cherry candy. It's a little artificial tasting. Since these supplements have a chewy caramel-like texture, they do tend to get stuck on my teeth. So I usually chew it a little and then let it slowly dissolve. It's not quite as sticky as toffee, but it does have a similar texture. I believe Viactiv now makes a flavored pill version if you're not too keen on chewy candies.
Though they're pricier than a bottle of pills, these chewy candy-like multi-vitamins have their perks. They taste good, go down easily with no upset stomach, and are individually wrapped so you can toss them in your purse, all while still providing 12 essential vitamins plus calcium. I'll buy them again, but hopefully Viactiv will come out with an assorted variety so I can satisfy all my sweet-tooth cravings.
