When I was in school, I would get strep throat 1-2 times per school year. I haven’t had strep throat in years, but when the weather does it’s thing here, I have terrible sinus problems. Just last week here in Eastern TN, it got up to 60+ degrees on Monday. It snowed Tuesday and Wednesday, and the weather was back into the 60’s on Thursday. This is typical springtime weather here, and it takes a toll on my sinuses. My nose feels raw, and my throat gets sore from the excessive drainage.

One thing I’ve always kept nearby is Vicks Chloraseptic Sore Throat Spray. It temporarily relieves minor sore throat pain.

The Spray

It comes in a 6 oz. spray bottle. One bottle lasts me for several months. You can get menthol (green) or cherry flavor. I find that the cherry flavor is more tolerable than the menthol. It is alcohol free, aspirin free, and sugar free.

The directions on the bottle state:
-Adults 12 years and older: Spray 5 times directly into throat or affected area.
-Children 2-12: Spray 3 times.
-Under 2: consult doctor

What it does

Spraying this stuff 5 times provides some great relief for a sore throat. It provides instant relief by numbing the area you spray. It is also effective on other mouth and gum irritations, canker sores, and pain from braces or other dental work. As the package says, it is only temporary. It is recommended to wait 2 hours in between sprays. Don’t think it will last this long, though. I have a hard time sticking to the recommendation when my throat is REALLY sore.


How do you use it?

Easy. Just aim the nozzle towards the back of your sore throat and spray. Not only will it numb your throat, but it is likely to numb the back of your tongue as well. If you have pain elsewhere in your mouth, point towards the pain and spray.

-Flavor
-Glycerin
-Purified Water
-Saccharin Sodium

The active ingredient?

-Phenol 1.4%

What is phenol? Phenol is a poison. It is used mostly in making plastics, but it also used in disinfectants and medical products. Large amounts of phenol over an extended period of time can cause some uncomfortable side effects like diarrhea. However, if you were to drink the entire bottle of Vicks Chloraseptic, I don't think you would experience any side effects. 1.4% is pretty minimal. I've been using this stuff for years, and have never had any type of side effect.

Overall

I would recommend Vicks Chloraseptic Spray for anyone suffering from any type of mouth pain. Especially a sore throat. It is the only product I know of that instantly numbs the painful area.
