The cold and flu bug is making its rounds at the Zick house. I believe we have tried every variety of over-the-counter medicines on the subject! Now that everyone is on the mend, I picked out the one that consistently worked best for the members of my family: DayQuil.
To be completely honest, I sent my husband out to get a similar product by Tylenol, as it had always worked for me in the past. My husband mistakenly brought this back in its place. My son was afflicted with the unstoppable rebel cold at this point, and had taken the last of my Tylenol Cold and Flu medicine. Upon his dose of Dayquil, he told me he finally felt better!
These pills look like horse pills; they are huge! They are, however, liquicaps, so though they are large, they do go down quite easily. For some reason, they don’t seem to hurt a sore throat as bad as the typical coated pill. There bright orange color make them easy to distinguish from any other medication should the foil packages become dislodged from the box. They also have the name of the medicine and expiration date on the back of each foil packet, which would be helpful in a similar situation. These foil packages are easy to open, but on the box it has a warning that this medication is not for households with small children. Please make note of that if you do have curious toddlers running around.
These pills come 20 to the pack, for around $6.00, which gives you 10 doses. If you are really sick, this pack would last you about a day and a half. The package recommends not exceeding 6 doses total in one 24 hour period. This medicine needs to be stored at room temperature. Since this is the non-drowsy formula, you can take them all day long, which is another reason I prefer these to other brands. I can give these to my son before school and they will likely work on his symptoms throughout the day.
This particular medicine is designed to relieve cold and flu symptoms such as aches and pains, fever, cough, sore throat, headache and nasal congestion. It is alcohol and antihistamine free. Can you believe when I bought this they still had to see my ID!! As with most medications, if you drink more than 3 alcoholic drinks per day, you need to consult your doctor to ask if this medicine is right for you, as it could cause liver damage. However, if you drink more than 3 alcoholic drinks a day, I’d guess your liver isn’t your top priority, anyway. Dayquil worked, as stated, on each of these symptoms that my son was having, although to be fair I must say that this was not the very beginning, and worst part of his cold. I’m not sure anything makes you feel much better on those days. If your symptoms, especially a sore throat, last more than two days you will need to consult your doctor to make sure you don’t have something more serious, or are in need on an antibiotic.
This medicine is recommended for adults and children aged 12 and over. My son is 11, but more than qualifies as an adult by weight. Ask your doctor if you are unsure whether this medication is suitable for your child.
Ask a doctor before using if you’ve taken an MAOI in the last two weeks, if you get nervous, dizzy or sleepless, if your symptoms worsen after 5 days, or if fever is still present after 3 days. You should stop taking Dayquil if you experience redness or swelling, experience new symptoms or if your cough comes back with a headache or rash. Always ask your doctor about any drugs you are taking if you are pregnant or breast-feeding.
We were able to use this drug without any side effects at all. I would use this product on myself, and more importantly, on my child again.
