| anae428's Full Review: Vicks NyQuil Liquid |
For about 2 years, I have been using Vicks NyQuil multi-sympton cold and flu liquid medicine in original flavor. This is the only brand I trust to guarantee me a good nights sleep. With minimal complaints from me, Id say this medicine has given me that best and quickest relief possible.
This particular bottle of Vicks NyQuil has a bitter original flavor, which is one of my complaints. However, it delivers multi-symptom relief, including relief for the common cold and the flu, minor aches, pains, headaches, muscular aches, sore throat, fever, runny nose and sneezing, nasal congestion, and bronchial irritation. In my experience, it does best in relieving my stuffy nose, my headaches, and runny nose, but has only given minor results to me for pain.
HOW TO FIND THIS BOTTLE:
This NyQuil bottle contains a dark forest green liqiuid with green and dark blue labeling. You will see Vicks NyQuil written simply in white, stating that its the original flavor. The bottle contains 10 fluid ounces of liquid medicine and only 10% of alcohol.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
NyQuil contains active ingredients that we find in common medications today. Included in these ingredients are acetaminophen, pronounced a-seat-o-min-o-fin, which is a pain reliever and fever reducer, dextromethorphan, a cough reducer, doxylamine, an antihistamine, and pseudophedrine, pronounced sue-doe-fed-rin, which is a nasal decongestant. No wonder this stuff works so well! They even give you the science behind it!
DIRECTIONS FOR USE:
First, no one under the age of 12 should take this medication. Its loaded with hard-working medications and may have more than a child needs to rid themselves of the common cold. Adults can take 2 tablespoons of NyQuil every 6 hours, but no more than 4 times a day.
INACTIVE INGREDIENTS:
Because of the word Inactive, some people skip these facts, assuming that theyre not important. However, daily products used in food or other medications can be of concern to you if you are allergic to a particular thing. The inactive ingredients include:
10% alcohol
Citric acid
Flavor, green 3, yellow 6 and yellow 10
High fructose corn syrup
Glycol
Purified water
Sodium
Sodium citrate
POSSIBLE SIDE EFFECTS:
I havent heard of anyone complaining about side effects, but the ones listed are nervousness, dizziness, sleeplessness, or continuation of symptoms after 7 days of using NyQuil.
STORAGE OPTIONS:
There really are no storage options for this medication. Some meds allow you to store your meds in the fridge, but this strictly needs to be at ROOM TEMPERATURE.
Also, I would not keep this medication for over a year as it expired quickly.
A USEFUL TIP:
I used to work at a pharmacy, so I got first-hand advice from experienced pharmacists. When a patient would purchase NyQuil, the pharmacist would always tell them to drink water (from the same cup you measured your NyQuil with) after drinking the liquid NyQuil. The easy passage of tap water/bottled water will help the syrupy NyQuil to settle into your stomach much quicker, as opposed to letting the medication linger in your throat.
THE PRICE:
I paid around $6 for my bottle of NyQuil at Walgreens. Got every pennys worth too!
WARNINGS:
Like all non-prescription items, its wise to make sure you are not taking drugs that interact. The labeling on the NyQuil bottle states that people taking MAOIs (usually for emotional conditions) such as depression pills or Parkinsons disease should not take NyQuil. You should also consult with your doctor the safety of NyQuil if you have heart disease, asthma, emphysema, thyroid disease, diabetes, glaucoma, high blood pressure, excessive mucus, breathing problems, bronchitis, chronic cough, cough due to smoking, and urinating problems due to an enlarge prostate gland.
MY EXPERIENCE:
I use NyQuil just about every time I cant sleep due to sickness. Whether I have a small cold or horrible nasal congestion (etc), NyQuil delivers results so fast, they should call it NyQuick!
The only complaint is the feeling of having a slight hangover in the morning, but this can be prevented by taking a bit less than the dosage recommended on the back of the bottle.
There was a time when NyQuil didnt work for me at all, but it was because I took a daily vitamin at night instead of in the morning. Vitamins work by absorbing in your body, while absorbing whatever else is bothering it. So I know thats why the NyQuil didnt work. My suggestion is to take NyQuil without adding any other absorbing medication to your body. I also go in detail about the science behind vitamin usage with other medications in my One a Day review. For more facts, please go to my One a Day review at http://www.epinions.com/content_105406172804
I use NyQuil an average of once a week in the winter because theres always something wrong with me around that time:/ The taste is dreadful, but its well worth the struggle. Its also a great medication to keep around for guests or spouses because it fights more symptoms than one.
Overall, NyQuil comes from a trusted brand, and its relied on by so many people. The imitation brands only wish they had the power of NyQuil.
Thanks for taking the time to read this review.
