Hubby swears by Vicks Nyquil Liquid . We have Dayquil and Nyquil in assorted flavors. It's the first thing he'll grab if he's sick. He's a huge guy and never has an adverse reaction to it. Hubby loves alcohol (wine, beer, Vodka etc)so the taste doesn't bother him. When I tried it I found it was far too much like alcohol for me and I like alcohol but only in creamy liquors or fruity drinks. If I could take Nyquil it would have to be a Shirley Temple version. They do make a cherry like flavor but to me it still has that alcohol undertone to it. It's incredibly sweet. Their other flavor, the green version has an anise-y flavor to it. When I'm not feeling well to have to swallow something distasteful just adds insult to injury.
There are LiquiCap versions of Nyquil. That would be my choice if I could tolerate this medication. Nyquil is availabe in a childrens version as well. Children over 12 can take Vicks Nyquil Liquid.
Vicks Nyquil Liquid does contain 10% alcohol so if you are a recovering alcoholic and need to abstain you can find non alcohol versions of this.
I personally cannot take Vicks Nyquil Liquid. It contains ephedrine (pseudoephedrine hydrochloride/60 mg. I get the heebie jeebies. It feels like all the nerve endings in my body are itchy or on fire. It feels as though all my nerve endings are attacking me. It's the way you fell when your hand falls asleep only magnified 100 times and all over your body. Definately an adverse reaction. Also, I have a thyroid condition.
I use homeopathic medication if I contract a cold. I use nasal strips for congestion, teas for my sore throat and homeopathic over the counter lozenges with zinc.
Vicks Nyquil Liquid contains :
1000 mg Acetominophen(like Tylenol) for pain and fever reduction.
12.5 mg Doxylamine Succinate for decongestion and to induce sleep (this is the main ingredient in Unisom and why you get that deep sleep when you take this)
30 mg Detromethorphan Hydrobromide, a cough suppresor
60 mg Pseudoephedrine Hydrochloride (like Sudafed)
Decongestant *to be avoided if your Ephedra sensitive
Vicks Nyquil Liquid comes with a small measuring cap cup. Recommended dose is 2 T mo more than four times a day. Oh, one more thing, I find it's a real trick to open the cap, it's childproof, meaning if you have any problems with your hands you are going to need help. It's VERY ,VERY childproof.
Eckerd makes its own version with similar ingredients but half the mg.
If you drink more than 3 drinks/day consult your physician.
People who are taking sedatives, tranquilizers or an MAOI inhibitor should not take this product without consulting a doctor. There are many other warnings on the NyQuil label. Those who have diabetes, thyroid disease and many other common conditions are told to speak with their doctor before taking this product. An overdose can cause liver damage & requires immediate attention even if you don't exhibit signs or symptoms.
Always keep this and all medications far away from children!
Vicks Nyquil Liquid is avalable at all drug stores and at your local large grocery stores, as well as K Mart, WalMart and similar stores. There are always sales and coupons. There are also the stores brands of Vicks Nyquil Liquid.
