I handed my husband the shopping list. He looked it over and saw Vicks NyQuil topping the list.
"Boy Bumblebee! You must really be sick!!" He scooped up our baby and ran off to the store returning 10 minutes later with the evil potion. He watched as he always does while I suffered down the first dose to make sure I really took it.
There I was, leaning over the sink...holding my breath, slugging down the shot glass of the green devil, grasping the counter for dear life. My face twisted up like one of those shrunken apple people. My foot stomping the floor like trigger counting to ten, all trying to swallow the most heinous smelling, foulest tasting, fastest working, most effective medicine known to mankind.
He makes me wait 10 minutes before he lets me brush the taste out of my mouth because he believes somehow that that would lessen the effectiveness of the drug. The taste is that of black licorice and rubbing alcohol.
Then he tucks me into our big comfy bed and covers me up all the way to my chin with a big fluffy down comforter. He kisses my forehead and slips out of the room turning off the light...or so I am told because 10 minutes after taking the elixir I am stupid, 15 minutes later and I am comatose.
Ahhh. The pleasant deep sleep induced by the "Nighttime, sniffling, sneezing, coughing, aching, stuffy head, fever, so you can rest and have a good morning medicine."
There is no dreaming when you have taken Nyquil. No nightmares. No hearing the garbage men rattling your cans at 2:00 A.M.. No hearing AC/DC practicing for their next tour in your living room. No hearing your child scream (so please have a sober competent adult to care for your children if you should choose to indulge.) No feeling a big grizzly bear licking your face and tasting what you had for dinner.
There is however your body healing itself without the complications of your constant sniffling, sneezing and whining.
You will wake feeling you have been hit over the head with a bowling ball and consequently slept at the bottom of a swimming pool. You will also wake (usually) without the ailments that you went to bed with, so if you were planning on slumping into work, slacking off and getting sympathy from your boss...well you had better be a good actor or wait to take the NyQuil.
My husband knows that I have a serious aversion to NyQuil. I can remember the very first time I was tortured with the foul tasting syrup. I can also remember a family trip that we had been looking forward to. I was all of maybe 12 and I had started getting sick.
My sister determined that my sniffling was not going to interfere with her good time decided I needed a good healthy dose of NyQuil. She tackled me and force fed me an adult dose. I spit it out and she repeated the process, gloating how this would cure me and we would be on our merry way to vacationland in the morning.
I had spent the evening regurgitating the vile liquid and we ended up postponing our trip BECAUSE of her endeavor. So please, keep this and all medicines out of reach of nasty, ill intentioned, psychotic siblings and ALL children.
NyQuil has several warnings on its labels regarding whom may and may not consume it and what drug interactions may result..so please read the label.
One of the "inactive" ingredients in NyQuil is alcohol. It contains 10% alcohol in a 2 tablespoon dose. To put that into perspective Crown Royal Whiskey is only 40%. It will (if I have not made this clear) knock you on your heiney.
When he was a teen my husband worked at a Ma and Pa type of grocery store in a questionable neighborhood. In the city that we lived in alcohol could not be sold from 2:00 A.M. Sunday Morning until 6:00 P.M. that night. The winos and hookers would come in and buy up the NyQuil for their "colds", go outside drink it down and then come back in looking for more.
There are also some cocktails that call for NyQuil. As a matter of fact I am surprised that Ladycynic hasn't reviewed it in the "Spirits" category!
My suggestion for drinking it..hold your nose and have a comfy place to land. I hope you feel better.
