Here We Go Again
I’m not kidding, when you have four children in five years you can almost guarantee that one of them will be sick at any given time during the cold/flu season. Just when you think you’re out of the woods, you wake up in the middle of the night to the sound of coughing.
I have a tendency to buy medicines as inexpensively as I can. To be quite honest, most of our medications are purchased at Dollar Tree, my local $1 store. I always check active ingredients and expiration dates, but I’ve never found a medicine there yet that didn’t perform as well as anything from a drugstore.
The last time my family got a round of colds it hit all off us–my husband included. I happened not to be able to make a trip to Dollar Tree (it’s an hour each way), so I was stuck purchasing medicines at the grocery store in the small town nearest us㪬 miles away. Needless to say, the selection of medicines in a store this small is minimal, name-brand, and pricey. I needed cold medicine which would allow him to feel relief and work through the day (Vicks DayQuil Liqui-Caps) and to feel relief to rest at night–Vicks NyQuil Cough.

Vicks NyQuil Cough is meant to relieve coughs (well, duh), runny noses, and sneezing.

You have:
*asthma
*glaucoma
*breathing problems
*persistent or chronic cough
*trouble urinating due to enlarge prostate gland
*emphysema
*excessive phlegm (mucus)
*chronic bronchitis
*cough associated with smoking
Or are:
*taking sedatives
*taking tranquilizers
Possible Reactions/Side Effects
Vicks NyQuil Cough can cause marked drowsiness or excitability. Children are especially prone to experience excitability.
Alcohol is known to increase the drowsiness, so avoid alcoholic drinks while taking this medicine.
Also, because of the drowsiness you should be careful when driving a vehicle. Make sure you know how this medicine will effect you before you get behind the wheel of a car. Or better yet, let someone else do the driving.
Dosage Information
On the bottle for Vicks NyQuil Cough the only dosage listed is that for adults and children over the age of 12, which is 2 TBSP (30 mL) every six hours as needed.
A call to your pharmacist can easily give you the proper dosage of this medicine for younger children. I will not share this information in this review because I lack to medical ‘pedigree’ to make it appropriate.

Our Experience
When I first picked up the bottle of Vicks NyQuil Cough off the shelf of the grocery store, I looked at the label to see what flavor it was. I’ve had a bad experience with getting my kids to take ‘regular’ flavor (licorice) Vicks NyQuil before, to the point of one of my children making himself throw up he was in such a panic over it. This bottle of Vicks NyQuil Cough came in Cherry Flavor, which was a definite plus.
The next step was dispensing Vicks NyQuil Cough to my family. My husband and I both took this medicine easily. I thought the flavor was slightly ‘mediciney,’ but not offensive in any way. The real test was whether or not my children would take it. All four of my children, including the one who will get so upset he vomits if he doesn’t like the flavor of a medicine, took Vicks NyQuil Cough easily. By the time second doses were needed my kids were arguing over who got their medicine first!
Within 15 minutes of taking Vicks NyQuil Cough I noticed a substantial lessening of my cold and cough symptoms, and my husband reported similar results. My children all seemed to respond to this medicine quickly as well!
I only use Vicks NyQuil Cough at night, since I noticed right away that it makes everyone in my family quite groggy. It allows them to sleep all night long without discomfort. A lot of cold medicines quit working after only four hours, which leaves me to get up in the middle of the night to re-dose. Vicks NyQuil Cough works for a solid six hours during the day, but at night it seems to allow my children to sleep a solid eight before they get their symptoms back.
Another thing I loved about Vicks NyQuil Cough is that it contains only two active ingredients. The ‘regular’ NyQuil liquid also contains pseudoephedrine and acetaminophen, two ingredients that I don’t always need. I prefer not to give my kids ‘extra’ medicine.
Recommendation
Vicks NyQuil Cough is an excellent choice for treating nighttime coughing and sinus drainage. I recommend it highly for children and adults alike.
As always, consult your doctor before choosing any medications for an infant.
