This year my entire family has been plagued with colds and viruses. Unfortunately, I am usually the first to get them, and I wind up passing them on to everyone else. I recently came down with a cold that seemed to last forever. It left behind a really nasty cough that would wake me up in the middle of the night. I couldn't sleep, and I was coughing so loud, my family couldn't either. Apparently my husband had grown tired of the lack of sleep, so he came home with a bottle of Vicks Nyquil Cough Relief.
~*~Cost~*~
My husband purchased our 6 OZ bottle of Vicks Nyquil Cough Relief at our local Wal-Mart for $4.97. This product is also available in a 10 OZ bottle for a little bit more. It is actually priced higher than other Vicks Nyquil products. Unfortunately he only found one flavor, and it was only available in liquid form. You can also purchase this in a two pack, which winds up being a little bit cheaper in the end. Vicks Nyquil Cough Relief can be found where Vicks products are sold, varying in price.
~*~Some Details~*~
As the name suggests, Vicks Nyquil Cough Relief is specially formulated to relieve coughs. It also relieves runny noses and sneezing caused by the common cold or sinuses. It still has the famous Vicks Nyquil formula designed to help you get the sleep you need.
As I mentioned above, Vicks Nyquil Cough Relief is only available in liquid form and in one flavor at this time. The flavor is the dreaded Cherry. Unfortunately, it tastes almost exactly like the Cherry flavor of Vicks Nyquil, only a tad bit sweeter.
Ingredients:
Active: 15 mg Dextromethorphan HBr (cough suppressant) 6.25 mg Doxylamine succinate (antihistamine)
Inactive: Alcohol (10%), blue 1, citric acid, flavor, high fructose corn syrup, polyethylene glycol, propylene glycol, purified water, red 40, saccharin sodium, and sodium citrate
Vicks Nyquil Cough Relief only contains 17.5 mg of Sodium.
As with any over the counter medication, be sure to read the warnings and do not exceed the recommended dosage. Vicks Nyquil Cough Relief is to be taken every 6 hours. This product is not meant for children under twelve years of age.
~*~My Experience~*~
I was quite relieved when my husband brought home our bottle of Vicks Nyquil Cough Relief. I had been taking another Vicks medication for coughing, but, it wasn't providing enough relief during the night time. I hated that this medication wasn't available in pill form, as I have grown to really hate the taste of any liquid medication.
Despite my reservations about the taste, which, believe me, is really horrible, Vicks Nyquil Cough Relief does provide quick, lasting relief. Within 30 minutes after taking one dose, my coughing eased substantially, and I was ready to doze off. I didn't wake up once during the night with a coughing spell which brought great joy to my entire (sleepy) family.
When I woke up in the morning, my cough was still nowhere to be found. It finally caught up with me later in the afternoon, and it was back full force. I'm not sure if the cough suppressant in Vicks Nyquil Cough Relief suppressed the cough too well or not. When that coughing spell hit, I thought I was going to die. After about 10 minutes, it eased off. The same thing occurred when I took my second dose. I slept great, no coughing, but, the coughing caught up with me later in the day and made me regret my decision to take more Vicks Nyquil Cough Relief.
Much of my runny nose and sneezing had eased off prior to my taking Vicks Nyquil Cough Relief. However, what little congestion I had at night was also relieved. I think that this would work wonderfully for anyone experiencing cough/runny nose/sneezing, without the fever, body aches, etc.
As I mentioned earlier in my review, the taste is pretty bad. It is extremely strong, just as Vicks Nyquil is, only it has a slightly sweeter taste. That extra bit of sweetness makes this medication even harder to swallow.
I experienced no allergic reactions to this medication.
~*~Overall Opinion~*~
I would highly recommend Vicks Nyquil Cough Relief. It worked quickly on my cough, providing me with extended relief as well as the sleep I so desperately needed. The extent of the relief is long lasting!
