When I'm sick - really sick - I turn to Nyquil Cold & Flu Relief.  No other medicine works quite as well for me, when it comes to relieving my cough, and allowing me to sleep. 

Nyquil combines a pain and fever reliever (acetaminophen 500 mg/T) with a cough suppressant (dextromethorphan 15 mg/T) and an antihistamine (doxylamine succinate 6.25 mg/T).  Add 10% alcohol to the mix and you have quite a strong concoction, guaranteed to have me snoring - usually within 20 minutes.

And before I fall asleep, I get to enjoy the soothing warmth that this thick liquid leaves on my throat.  In terms of providing relief, and lulling me to sleep, Nyquil is really quite a "wonder drug".

However, it is not perfect.  The worst problem is the taste.  The cherry flavor is "barely palatable" in my opinion.  I will take it, knowing it will bring relief, but this is one medicine I am in no danger of abusing, let's put it that way.  And - adults are instructed to take two tablespoons!  That's a fairly large dose of something that tastes awful!  Of course, the cherry flavor is a vast improvement over their original flavor - that one I simply won't take.  Nyquil also comes in tablets.  The tablets work just as well at putting me to sleep, but they don't provide the warm, soothing relief to the sore throat.  And they are quite large - sometimes when your throat is sore, you just don't want to swallow large tablets.

So, for me, the best compromise between taste and relief is Nyquil Cherry Flavor.  The ability to get a good night's sleep, when you're feeling awful is worth suffering the awful taste.  Not to mention the 6.99 for the 10 oz. bottle.

Obviously, when using any medication, use proper precautions.  The only thing I would add about this medicine specifically, is to only take it when you can spend at least six hours sleeping.  I would never take it, for instance, at 3:00 AM if I had to get up at 7:00.  Attempting to do so would leave me dizzy, and stumbling around the house.  This is a medicine I take at bedtime, only, and only when I know I won't have to be alert for at least six hours.
