Funny. I sat here reading and rating all day, not really in the mood to write. After having read Marieroy's epinion on Vicks VapoRub, I changed my mind. I had actually decided today to look to see whether this product was included in the OTC list. Well, I am glad to see that it is. You see, I am addicted to this product. I use it just about every day and I never leave the house without it. Since I suffer from a lot of nasal congestion, it is perfect for me!
Marieroy is so right about the nostalgic effect and sense of comfort that this product brings.
The active ingredients (camphor, menthol, eucalyptus oil) in Vicks VapoRub work naturally through the inhalation of its medicated vapors to relieve nasal congestion and coughing.
Relief is immediate with this product. I had complete blockage today in one nostril. Once I applied a small amount under my nostril, my passages opened instantaneously!
Since it is for external use only, it does not interact with other medication the way that other medications can. It has few side effects but there are warnings from Health Central that you can overdose on camphor and that the effects may be quite serious. In that I use this quite often without incident, I believe that it would have to be a large amount ingested or inhaled but I agree that caution should be exercised.
I find it especially soothing and effective to rub Vicks VapoRub on your entire neck and chest and to then wrap a comfy scarf loosely around it. It is actually designed to be used on your neck and chest so that the vapors could work their way up to your nasal passages.
This product can be used on children as young as two but your physician should be consulted for younger children.
It is indeed also a great relief for muscular aches and pains.
As with any other medication it should be used only as directed and you should read the label for important warning information.
There is an expiration date on the package and it should not be used if it is expired. My cousin has a huge jar in her medicine cabinet that is obviously expired and brown but she insist on using it. Yuk!
If on other meds, you should refer to the product labels for specific warnings and you should consult your pharmacist or doctor who should be up on drug interaction.
Vicks VapoRub is intended for the treatment of cough and nasal congestion associated with the common cold. It is recommended that it should only be used for 5 to 7 days until symptoms resolve.
A few words of caution
DO NOT HEAT. NEVER EXPOSE IT TO A FLAME, MICROWAVE, OR PLACE IN ANY CONTAINER IN WHICH YOU ARE HEATING WATER AS THIS CAN CAUSE THE MIXTURE TO SPLATTER RESULTING IN SERIOUS BURNS.
Since I have been known to send my significant other out in the middle of the night if I run out, you should not be surprised to read that I highly recommend Vicks VapoRub.
As Marieroy points out, it is a little pricey but to me it is worth every cent.
