A Must For Mousse Lovers!
Written: Oct 15 '01 (Updated Aug 17 '06)
Pros:Adds fullness and body, smell is not offensive, readily available.
Cons:Harder to apply and a bit sticky.
The Bottom Line: Better than other mousse's I have used, but I still prefer the VS Thickening Spray. If you are a mousse user, you'll love it!
VS Line of Products
I love the Vidal Sassoon line of products made especially for fine, thin hair. My hair is baby fine, and has never had much body ... it is just straight and thin. I have used the VS Hair Wash and VS Thickening Spray with great results and can say I am very impressed with their salon quality products!
Enter the VS Volumizing Mousse
One day while shopping for VS Hair Wash, I ran across a special two-for-one deal ... the Hair Wash and the Volumizing Mousse were available in a twin pack, for one low price. I couldn't lose, so I snatched up a few of these and anxiously tried them out the next morning.
VS Volumizing Mousse claims to "add extra body and fullness". The can is a dark gray color, with the VS Sassoon name printed in light gray. It is 6.6 ounces, and comes out as a shaving cream would, in a puffy white cloud. I put a mound of the Mousse into my hand, and then spread it through my hair- from the roots to the crown of my head. Lifting my hair away from my head while blow drying works the best for me. I liked the smell of this product, not too perfumy, and it could probably be used for either men or women.
My Results
While the VS Volumizing Mousse did help to make my hair appear thicker and fuller, I cannot say that I am as happy with it as I am with the VS Thickening Spray.
Personally, the spray is much easier to apply. I am not a huge fan of mousse products to start with, they seem a little bit too messy for me. One day I had just applied the VS Mousse to my hair and got distracted by a phone call before I could dry my hair. When I returned to finish my styling, my hair was stiff from the mousse. I have not had this experience with the Thickening Spray. I also have to wash my hands when I am done using the mousse, as they tend to feel a bit sticky.
This mousse did help my hair to look fuller, it didn't add a greasy appearance, and my hair felt pretty natural and light (almost fluffy) afterward.
Low Down on Ingredients
Water, isobutane, polyquaternium-4, propane, propylene glycol, DMDM hydantooin, C9-Cll ether, keratin amino acids, panthenol, myristoyl hydrolyzed collagen, citric acid.
Comparing Ingredients
In reading the labels on both the VS Thickening Spray
and the VS Volumizing Mousse, I can say that I prefer the Thickening Spray. I always appreciate "natural" ingredients when I can find them, and the Thickening Spray contains panthenol (just like the mousse does) as well as castor oil, pelvetia canaliculata extract, laminaria digitata extract, swertia japonica extract, hydrolyzed soy protein, sage leaf extract, rosemary leaf extract, nettle extract, and clove flower extract. None of these extracts are in the mousse.
If you would like to know what the natural extracts do for your hair, please read my review on the VS Thickening Spray. In a nutshell, they help to make hair full, soft, shiny, tangle free, and are therapeutic for the scalp.
Company Information
Did you know that Vidal Sassoon products are made by the Proctor & Gamble company? I didn't know this until I dialed the toll free number on the back of the can, and spoke with a customer representative who said she worked for P&G!
Final Thoughts
I have tried several different mousse products on the market today, and VS is by far my favorite of them all. The fact remains that I don't typically enjoy using mousse, but rather find the VS Thickening Spray much more to my liking. If you are a big fan of hair mousse, you will probably be very pleased with VS Volumizing Mousse.
