Pros: Long barrel!
Cons: No automatic safety turn off, no 60 second heat up.
My old faithful curling iron recently died a horribly young and untimely death, so in a desperate rush, I ran to my local Navy Exchange to grab something to make do with so as I wouldnt head off to work looking like a bed head.
Ive been curling my hair since the mid to late 80s and have found that unless its freshly cut there is no way to avoid doing so daily. When I arrived at the store, I was disappointed to find that there were only two selections of curling irons to choose from. Since I absolutely couldnt do without, I decided to choose the lesser of two evils, the Vidal Sassoon VS100. I chose this one of the two for one reason and one reason only: It has one feature that I think is absolutely great, and yet harder to find than one would imagine: A long barrel. A long barrel is essential for people like me who like to squeeze every single minute out of the snooze button in the mornings, and then rush to get ready. A long barrel simply lets me curl more of my hair in the curling iron at one time, thus cutting my hair fixing time almost in half. Granted, it never takes me more than 10 minutes to curl my hair on a bad day, but every minute counts sometimes!
I have to say that this is a bare minimum curling iron no fancy extras. It has two heat levels: High and Low, and then of course theres Off. You have to slide the lever up and down to get the desired heat effect. Since this isnt a push-button, there is no automatic turn-off feature in case you leave the house and forget to unplug it. I dont usually have a problem with that, but its a nice safety net just in case.
It heats up well, but it doesnt have the 60 second heat up like my old one did, and I really miss that like I said earlier every minute counts! As long as I remember to plug it in and turn it on before I jump in the shower, its heated by the time I get out, get dressed and blow-dry my hair usually 15-20 minutes. Ive also noticed at other times that it can be used after about 5 minutes, but I leave my hair in it a little longer than usual just in case!
I bought the one inch barrel, because I like just slight waves in my hair instead of little thin curls, but it also available in smaller barrel sizes such as A? and A? inch. It was also very cheap only $6.00 and some change.
As far as I know the VS100 only comes in black and silver, and has a red light indicator when the product is in use. Its easy to hold and maneuver, and the cord is adequately long. If I had one complaint it would be that the black protector piece that you hold youre thumb on is a little small Ive slightly burnt myself a couple of times.
If youre looking for a no frills or fuss curling iron this is the one for you, but Id pass it up if youre looking for more fancy features unless youre in a pinch!
