From time to time it seems we all fight the need to upgrade. I found myself in this situation when my new video card had a straight DVI and VGA inputs. Well I had 2 VGA monitors one being a flat screen and the other my trusty ol’ CRT monster both with VGA only. No, the adapter won’t work on a straight DVI –D sooooo it was time to upgrade. My other flat LCD was a Viewsonic and I have been satisfied so when I saw the VA223WM on sale, it wasn’t a hard decision. Bear in mind I have never been a vidphile If it looks crisp and clear and the colors are what they should be then I am a Happy Camper. However let’s take a look at the tech end of things shall we?
Under the Screen….
The first thing you notice is the 22inch “Wide Screen” with a normal resolution of 1920x1080..(Can you say HD?) The Contrast Ratio is 16000:1 and a 5ms response time. The display itself 21.5 viewable color TFT Active Matrix LCD with a 16:9 ratio. The dual inputs are VGA and DVI-D (No adapter folks..it’s DVI). The unit supports 16.7 million colors (Tell me somebody in QC counts them) Finally it comes with “speakers” If you have a “Blue Ray” it does support HDCP. It can either be used with the included base or wall mount (Optional). It also is “Energy Star” compliant. The Warranty is a 3 yr limited on parts, labor and backlight.
The OSD (On Screen Diplay) is pretty cut and dry with no surprises or learning curve required. Access is via the front panel buttons. If you simply choose sRGB using “Color Adjust” it darn near keeps itself looking great!! The OSD also includes “Audio setup” (hmmmmm) and “Memory Recall”. The package includes the display as well as audio cable, powercable, USB cable, Quick Start page as well as the Viewsonic Wizard CD (Drivers and Full Manual) but as far as a required DVI-D cable your on your own. Expect to shell out up to $30.00 or so. It does incude a VGA cable however. I understand the reason behind it however I would gladly forgo the speakers for a DVI cable included. Speaking of speakers…read on…
My View as a Consumer
I am just a regular type of person who knows PC’s and I am sure that there are LCD’s available with higher specs, bigger bells and louder whistles however the product is perfect for most folks. Viewsonic has been a trusted name for years and this model is no exception. My only negative comment is with the speakers..Why? I have never understood this logic and I have to hear any decent sound from built in audio on a flat screen. I would rather have a DVI cable included and no speakers but this is no reason not to consider the VA223wm. It does it’s job well and ya know the price is vey reasonable, I paid $149.00 US online and the local PC big box was 5 bucks higher. Enjoy HD for great price!
