For the price, I'd have to say that this is one heck of a monitor. As my title would suggest, it's not perfect, and someone doing very precise work might have problems. I'll talk about that later, but first...
This monitor is inexpensive for a 17" flat screen, at just below $300. Viewsonic used a Trinitron tube on this one, so there are two faint lines across the display. While I can ignore this most of the time, I know folks who cannot.
The .25 dot pitch on the monitor offers fantastic detail in images, and small text is a breeze to read.
Color appears to be phenomenal on this monitor, and images seem to jump from the glass sometimes. The display is stable and flicker free at all recommended resolution/refresh combinations, driven by a 3DFX Voodoo 3 2000 card using Macintosh Gamma correction. Since I'm not doing any serious DTP, I have not used the color matching software that is included.
There is one serious flaw with this monitor, and I'm still deciding whether or not to keep it (my reseller has a 30-day policy so I have time). I probably will, since I'm not doing serious design. The problem is a slight (very slight) bowing of the image at the corners. It is a problem common to flat display fronts, and one would have hoped that Viewsonic would have a better design to overcome the problem. It's clearly not as bad as flat monitors of not too long ago, but one would think the problem would be fixed completely by now.
My bottom line is that this is a terrific monitor for general word processing, web surfing, and gaming, but if intense and accurate design work is in the cards for you, it might be worth considering one with better geometry. I would recommend this monitor to a friend, with that caveat.
