| rbrtdod's Full Review: ViewSonic A75f 17 inch CRT Monitor |
I purchased the Viewsonic A75f on the recommendation of a store clerk at Comp USA after finding it there on sale for $200 (after rebate). The main reason for purchasing it was its flat screen. I work with graphics and have a 19 inch flat screen Sony which is GREAT. I was reassured that the A75f featured a Sony Trinitron tube and that its reliability was better than that of one other competing flat screen manufacture (non-US). I picked the 17 inch as a compromise since I was to use it with a second computer system in limited quarters and didn't want to go to 19 inches but wanted more performance than a 15 inch provides (VERY boxy after using a 19 inch). The computer I was to use it with was new from Gateway using a Windows Millenium Edition platform.
My only complaint was when I first fired up the system, the Windows operating system couldn't find the color profiles on the Viewsonic disk (CD-ROM). I discovered later that these were in zipped format and were on the disk but not in a form Windows immediately recognized.
The monitor is another GREAT. After a few tweaks, the screen greatly compares with my 19 inch Sony. In fact, the flat, square screen and clarity, gives you a real impression that you are looking at a 19 inch screen. I had heard some negative reviews on this monitor involving screen non-uniformity and distortion. I held my breath but none of that. The screen is really GOOD - uniform brightness and no distortion. I checked by bringing up graphics with distortion tests and the screen rendered them very well.
Ample adjustments are provided by means of a #1 and a #2 menu selection sequence and after using these, the image edges could be adjusted to almost perfect parallelism with the side masks all the way around. The color rendering also compared favorably to the Sony and was excellent.
All in all, I'm VERY happy with this monitor and the performance it provides at the low cost of $200 after rebate. Even the Viewsonic CD-ROM has some entertaining music and several slide shows as well as a collection of 16 Viewsonic desktops (colorful finch paintings) so it was appreciated as well. Warnings about the anti-reflective coating not holding up but I'm going to wait to test that one. Might be a few "bad ones" out of the box but this wasn't one of them!
