As winter approaches it is very important to give your lawn a little extra boost to protect it from the harsh winter elements. Many people believe that a lawn does not need fertilizer in the winter. Nothing could be further from the truth. Your lawn might not grow as fast in the winter but its future development in the spring and summer is determined by how you care for it now.
The root system in the winter needs a little extra TLC. Vigoro Winerizer Fertilizer will provide this boost. The fertilizer is made up of the following ingredients:
Nitrogen 22%
Phosphorus 3%
Potassium 14%
The numbers on the front of the bag listed as 22-3-14 are the percentages of the respective amounts of the product in the bag. Thus, 22% is Nitrogen, 3% is Phosphorus, and 14% is Potassium.
Nitrogen provides the greening of your lawn. Many believe a lawn has to be brown in the winter because of cold. This is not correct. The lawn turns brown, in most cases, because of a lack of Nitrogen. Giving your lawn that boost of Nitrogen in the fall will give it the needed "green" look for winter.
Phosphorus provided future root development for your lawn. Strong roots provide stronger grass that is more resistant to drought, heat, cold, and insects.
Potassium in summer fertilizers is usually the lowest number in the fertilizer. Most summer fertilizers will have a blend number of 27-3-3. In the case of Winter Fertilizers, the increased Potassium provides more resistance to the harsh cold weather. For that reason the amount of Potassium is increased in the Vigoro Winterizer Fertilizer.
Application:
This fertilizer should be applied on a calm day. It can be applied before it is going to rain. Each spreader you use has different drop rates. The back of the bag lists different spreader rates, so follow the instructions on the back of the bag. After applying the fertilizer, you need to water your lawn thoroughly. We are on water meters, so we like to wait until rain is in our immediate forecast to apply the fertilizer.
Clean-up:
It is very important to clean up after you apply the fertilizer. I like to sweep it up and sprinkle it back onto the lawn. I wash the areas I have swept to ensure that the product is gone. The fertilizer will leave stains on concrete so it is important to get it all picked up to protect your patios, driveways, and sidewalks.
Now (early fall) is the time to apply the Vigoro Winterizer fertilizer. Do not wait to long or you could risk damage to your lawn.
Final Thoughts:
I have found that Vigoro Winterizers makes my lawn healthy and green. I am very happy with the results and plan to keep it on hand in the early days of fall. We found it at our local Home Depot at a price I could afford, $6.99.
