scottsw1's Full Review: Visioneer OneTouch 5800 Flatbed Scanner
I've owned a Microtek E3 scanner since 1996 and have used it a lot. My Microtek was a SCSI interface, and as technology advances, it was time for an upgrade. I learned how great USB hardware is after I bought my Kodak Dx3600 digital camera (SEE REVIEW) and knew I wanted a USB scanner. Well the search is over.
FINDING THE RIGHT SCANNER
From past experience with a scanner, I knew that I wanted a device that was flatbed and could scan 8.5x11.5 documents. If the scan area is too small the scanner is worthless, if it has a large area then regular documents as well as most 8x10 photos or magazine covers can be scanned. I also wanted a device that the lid would expand for oversized objects. While looking at scanners, I had seen a lot of scanners with 1 touch scanning and thought this would be a nice feature.
Visioneer 5800USB
I finally selected the Visioneer 5800 USB because of a couple of reasons. The most important reason was money. I bought my scanner at Best Buy for $49.00 with a $30.00 mail in rebate, which translates into a total investment of $19.00! You might think that this scanner is junk because of price but this is not the case. The Visionner scanner really surprised me. Some of the features include 600x1200 dpi optical resolution plus 2400 dpi interpolated resolution. Also included are 48-bit color depth, 8.5x11.69 scanning area and a USB port. This scanner with the touch of a button will send the scanned objects directly to your e-mail program, a printer, or scan an object into your favorite editing program. This scanner is also very small and takes up little room on your desk, the scanner has about 1 inch on each side of the scanning surface and that is it's total footprint.
The Software programs that are included are Scan soft Paper port deluxe, Scan soft web publisher link, MGI Photo suite III SE, and Text Bridge Pro OCR software. I will admit that I only installed the Paper port software as it is also the main scanning software and I edit the photos in Adobe Photoshop.
The operation of the scanner is flawless. The scanner has great photo quality and is very fast! I think that total time to scan and transfer a photo is half of what my Microtek scanner was.
DISLIKES
The main dislike on this scanner is that the lid doesn't secure down. I wanted a scanner that you could raise the lid for oversized objects and the Visioneer does this, but if you aren't careful the entire lid will come off. Another small gripe is that almost all of the documentation is on cd-rom and very little as far as hard copy documentation. As you can tell, the gripes are pretty small and might not bother you as it did me.
BOTTOM LINE
The bottom line is that the Visioneer 5800USB is a great scanner at an unbelievable low price! If you were looking for a scanner, I would look no further.
