The Bottom Line: I would recommend it to those who have acne, If all else fails, there's no harm in trying this out, when the only side effect is diarrhea.

| tomorrow2sg's Full Review: Vitamin B-5 (Pantothenic Acid) |
[Notes are indicated by ** to allow the readers to compare the results of my previous regimens/alternatives to the results of the current use of B5 - to enable readers to realize that the results I have now are a result of B5 consumption. ]
HISTORY:
I have had acne since I was 14 & is coming to 20 now in a matter of days. It was a case of moderate acne, not severe.
Throughout the last 5 & 1/2 yrs, I have been using a lot of products containing either benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid. Some of those which I used previously, includes (in order through the years):
Oxy5
Oxy10
Neutrogena On-The-Spot Treatment (Benzoyl peroxide 2.5%)
Clearasil Zone Control Stick (2% Salicylic acid)
Panoxy 2.5
Panoxy 5
Thursday Plantation's Tea Tree Oil (Pure 100%)
Panoxy 10
Galderma 10
**In conclusion, though the products I mentioned above did aid in clearing up existing breakouts, it did not help to prevent any new breakouts. So my face was still a constant arena of redness and pimply, bumpy skin surfaces.
CURRENT:
In the last 2 months, I came across articles that commented on the effects of B5 for acne, as well as weight loss by the way. Researchers testing the effects of B5 on weight loss accidentally found that it also aided in clearing up acne, though for the severe cases, it took about 6 months with high doses (>10g) each day. If you doubt me, do go to Yahoo Search engines, type in "Pantothenic acid & Acne" and a graspful of articles will come up on its effects and uses.
Nutritional books and articles also mentioned that it is actually produced by the bacteria in our intestine which is readily absorbed, as well as from our diet. It is rare that people are deficient in this vitamin, but notwithstanding, taken in higher doses, it appears to be effective against acne. The RDA, depending on which country and build actually, is usually 0.1-1mg.
So, recently, at the end of October 2002, I started taking these supplements.
**I buy my supplements from GNC in 500mg capsules, and take them 3 times a day, each time only taking one capsule of 500mg. In the meantime, I continued to apply Galderma's benzoyl peroxide 10%, but only once before I go and sleep.
So 3 weeks went by, & the effects began to show on my face:
Smoother skin
Smaller pores as they are less clogged
Almost-cleared-up acne
**I use Galderma to clear up the remaining breakouts. From what I read, B5 had a pronounced effect on preventing new breakouts and a considerable effect on clearing out the existing ones, but I decided to use Galderma still to aid in the clearing up.
Thereafter, I decided to stop applying any more of the topical medications. So it's the 5th week since I started adding the supplements to my daily routines, and the 2nd week since I have decided to stop applying any more films of benzoyl peroxide over my face afore I sleep. It's still going well, and I reverted back to using Tea Tree Oil recently, sparingly for the occasional pimple. I decided to revert to Tea Tree Oil as I wished to wean my face off from keratinizing chemicals like Benzoyl peroxide.
RESULT OF B5 CONSUMPTION (CURRENT): Right now, except for one or two little pimples on my face, there is otherwise, smoother skin, smaller pores and non-oily skin. I also noticed at the same time, that my nails no longer chipped whenever they grew slightly longer.
SIDE EFFECT/S: As for side effects, the one and only,is diarrhea, if taken in doses exceeding 26grams. There are no reports of any toxic effects on the body when B5 is taken in high doses.
uPDATE: 2003, 22, 01
Still taking B5, but have now reduced the dose to 750mg per day, and currently not using any anti-acne medications. ;)My skin is still looking good and smooth. All the best to the rest of you**
